Callum Johnson vs. Sean Monaghan - 9 March 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Hearn plans to stage a DAZN card at that venue February 23. Algieri, a popular Long Island boxer, would help sell tickets to that event.

Image

That card could be headlined by IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev and another popular Long Island boxer, Joe Smith Jr. Recent reports out of Russia have indicated Beterbiev (13-0, 13 KOs) hasn’t committed to facing Smith (24-2, 20 KOs), thus that fight might not take place February 23.

Beyond the possible Hooker-Algieri and Beterbiev-Smith matches, that February 23 show likely will include a light heavyweight bout between England’s Callum Johnson (17-1, 12 KOs) and Sean Monaghan (29-2, 17 KOs). Monaghan also is a ticket-seller from nearby Long Beach, New York.

Looks like Hearn wants to kee Callum in the states..

Against a 37 year old... I remember when I joined this forum, Monaghan had a little hype behind him. Just a little. He was pushing for a fight against Adonis..

Then Sir Marcus Browns stopped him in 2 rounds.

Johnson should win handily, but it should be an entertaining bout whilst it lasts.
Monaghan is game, if nothing else. I imagine he is ranked too.

Light heavyweight contender Callum Johnson (17-1, 12 KOs) is looking ahead at several potential fights - including a domestic clash with undefeated prospect Joshua Buatsi and another fight in America, potentially with veteran Sean Monaghan.

According to Joe Gallagher, trainer of Johnson, his boxer has no issue with facing Buatsi.

The veteran coach wonders if the Olympic bronze medal winner, who only has nine professional bouts, is ready to face a fighter with the pro experience of Johnson. The contest was ordered by the British Boxing Board of Control, as a clash for the British title.

"One hundred percent, Joshua Buatsi," Gallagher told Sky Sports. "The board have made that. I do feel myself, it might be a little bit too early for Joshua Buatsi. It's down to his team, if they want to go on with it, they can do, but Callum Johnson has won the British title, he's operated at world level, he knows what he wants to do.

"Eddie (Hearn) has promised to bring him back in America in a big fight. We're in talks over a big fight for Callum Johnson over in America at the moment, so if Eddie delivers that, that's great news, that is what Callum Johnson wanted.

"If there's a meaningful fight over there for Callum Johnson to get a ranking or a final eliminator for a world-title shot, of course we'll handle that, and we'll give up the British title. But if there's nothing else on the horizon, then we're not going to be giving up the British title, we'll fight Joshua Buatsi instead. We'll see what happens."

If Johnson instead heads over to the United States, he might be looking at a fight with veteran Sean Monaghan, who recently lost a decision to world title challenger Sullivan Barrera.

"Yeah, Sean Monaghan, that's the name we're looking for," said Gallagher. "He's a good fighter who acquitted himself very well recently. I think it's Sullivan Barrera he fought. That would be a good fight for Callum Johnson.

"If it can be for anything at all, a belt on the line, like the WBC 'silver' or something like that, then that's a great fight. It's a positive step forward for Callum Johnson in his quest going forward to challenge for another world title. He would get more out of beating Monaghan for a belt in the world rankings than he would do for defending against Joshua Buatsi at British level."

Johnson should stop Monaghan.

Still baffles me that they never made Smith Jr vs Monaghan in NY.

Fair play to Johnson and Gallagher by the way saying they'll take Buatsi if nothing else pops up at world level. Hearn probably won't be thanking them for that, pretty much sorts Yarde's excuse out for him.

Callum Johnson and Sean Monaghan will clash in a crunch Light-Heavyweight battle at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York on Saturday March 9, live on DAZN in the US and on Sky Sports in the UK.

Johnson (17-1 12KOs) returns to the States following his first World title fight in October in Chicago against Artur Beterbiev, a wild shoot-out with the Russian champion where he hit the deck in the opening round, but returned the favor with interest in the second round before being stopped in the fourth.

Irish-American Monaghan (29-2 17KOs) is in no doubt as to what is on the line in what he’s calling a ‘do or die’ fight for his career.

The New Yorker enters the bout gone the ten round distance with Sullivan Barerra in November, and the 37 year old sees a victory over Johnson as a must-win to keep his World title dreams alive.

“I’ve had my eye on Callum since before the Beterbiev fight,” said Monaghan. “He has a come forward pressure style and our styles should make for a fan friendly fight.

“I know these Brit’s always come in shape so I’m already working very hard. This is a fight I absolutely need to win. No excuses, it’s do or die for me.”

Johnson and Monaghan clash on a huge bill in upstate New York led by a World title double-header in the shape of Bivol’s clash with Smith Jr and Maurice Hooker puts his WBO Junior-Welterweight title against unbeaten challenger Mikkel LesPierre. Ohio talent Otha Jones III makes his pro debut on the card, with more undercard action to be announced.

Saying that .I have seen most of Monaghan fights yea he nothing great .he got destroyed by Marcus Browne who beat jack. I think Monaghan did better against Sullivan Berra who has mixed it with the best. I am think ING jonshson wants to go for early ko or could be more interesting

Monaghan has never beaten any contenders of note who weren’t over the hill. A total spot picker. Johnson should beat him with ease.,

That was still impressive from 'The One'.

He did what good fighters should do against an aging Monaghan - beat them up then close the show.

He looked good but he took the easy option vacating British so he didn't have to fight Buatsi. That would have been a hell of a fight. A real 50/50.
