Martin Murray Retires

Martin Murray has confirmed his retirement from boxing in the aftermath of his latest defeat.

The Merseyside middleweight, 36, succumbed the WBC Silver belt to Hassan N’Dam on Saturday.

Murray, a former four-time world title challenger, took on the former WBO and WBA ‘regular’ world champion at Manchester Arena, exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office.

And Murray, in the wake of that defeat, has said that he will not fight again.

“I’m gutted,” said Murray, who knocked down N’Dam in the fight, about the affair. “I was at home and I thought I had got it. There was no way he won all those rounds, [like the scorecards suggested], and I was surprised.

“It is what it is. It wasn’t the performance I wanted and everything about it was right apart from the decision.”

Murray, who lost to George Groves back in June 2016, said during fight week that he believed that he was “just one loss away from retirement.”

“I’m not going to cry about it, but that’s it,” he continued. “I’m done. It’s taken me two-and-a-half years to get from the loss to Groves to here and I’ve had an awful year. My life is about my family, boxing is a job to me and I just can’t keep doing it.

“It’s time for a new venture, everything happens for a reason and it is what it is.”

I like Murray and wish him well in his retirement but he lost that fight and by some distance. He walked forward all night with a high guard not doing much work. N'Dam outboxed him pretty easily.

Been a fan of Murray and followed his career closely coming from his neck of the woods but he makes me feel uncomfortable in some of these interviews talking about "not getting a decision in his own country against a foreign fighter". He said similar in his interview with Kugan too and I'm trying to read between the lines to look for something else but it just seems like he's expecting a British hometown kind of score card when he lost a scrappy fight pretty clearly. We know it happens of course but no fighter should be expecting favours simply because of which country the bout takes place in and it can never be an excuse for losing. I couldn't argue with the 114-114 card or anything a couple of rounds either side tbh but it was a damp squib end to a career that petered out frustratingly for us all.

Martin is obviously disappointed with how his career has apparently ended (if he really does retire) but he should be proud of himself and I hope he doesn't get bitter, he has a lot to offer the sport still. He acquitted himself well in at least 2 world title attempts (Sturm/Martinez) and he can consider himself unlucky not to get at least one of those decisions ( I thought he won both but am biased, obviously) but he was too lethargic against Abraham and just brave as a lion to run into a peak GGG in his other efforts. Still, he won the British and Commonwealth belts, had an amazing career with fights all over the world and shared the ring with some legends and future hall of famers. Gutted he never got that big fight at St.Helens rugby ground as that could have been special but thanks for the ride MM

I thought he was really unlucky against Martinez. I had him winning that one. The Sturm one probably could've went either way but I actually had Sturm just shading that one.

I always find Murray hard to score. He's always coming forward but a lot of the time he doesn't do much just like last night. Although last night his output was the worst I've seen it!

Good luck to him, but most of the time he was just too one-paced for me to ever really enjoy watching.

Still, he’ll probably stay in Horse’s top 30 for a few more years yet anyway.

Pretty sure this is bullsheet, Martin Murray has not retired, he said earlier today ‘he’s not going to make any hasty decisions’ and he’s going on holiday with his family so I think this has been incorrectly reported.

Probably had one of the worst ‘last year’ in boxing in recent times.

Was supposed to challenge for a world title. Twice rescheduled as well.. not he he wanted his career to end.

As a person, seems a hellavu guy. His Insta is great, very family orientated. As a boxer, outrageously robbed against Sergio and debatable against Sturm but feck me was he just vanilla to watch.

There are some paydays left.. Decent domestic fights still out there.. He isn't that old but has been doing this for a while now.. It might be his body telling him to stop. I'm sure he must have some money in the bank, he could invest.. Seems a top bloke.

Maybe he doesn't want to make middleweight again? I know he fought at SMW a few times.. The Groves fight.

He could challenge Callum at ECHO? Two local lads? Will be a mismatch but would generate interest..

Tbf, he was beat fair by N'Dam.. N'dam has a pretty decent resume.
