Warrington 2018 fighter of the year??

Post by ajwesty13 »

I would have easily named usyk as the fighter of 2018 due to him clearing out the cruiser weight division but Warrington won 2 fights that many didn't give him much of a chance of winning however he managed 2 pull off epic fights.. that's gotta be worth something ... I have now changed my mind and think Warrington is my fighter for 2018

usyk for me

3 wins (bellew, gassiev, briedis) vs 2 wins (selbs and frampton)

all in his opponents backyard (uk, russia, latvia) while josh didnt travel and probably had the biggest support

cleaned out the division to become undisputed and lineal, only second undisputed cw champ ever and first 4 belt champ. beating two unbeaten champs in the top 3 and another good cruiser who had been champ w/o losing his title in the ring. josh still has a way to go to do that in his division.

that usyk was favoured to win is just a reflection of people thinking higher of him as a fighter imo. that shouldnt be a blow to his case imo. in 2018 he won more fights then warrington, won more accolades and accomplishments, and did it all facing hometown disadvantage. i think the level of opposition was similar.

I'm not suggesting that Warrington skill level is that of usyk but i genuinely thought Warrington with the level of boxing skill he had to.beat the fighters he did was outstanding...

Let's be honest everyone expected usyk to win all 3 fights even in the BTBF 95% of you believed. Usyk would be beat bredis 66% thoyght he would beat gassiev and another 95% to beat bellew... while Warrington was given a 25% to beat Frampton even after he beat selby ...

for that to me is more of a feat...

that just tells me ppl thought higher of usyk, i dont think that should hurt his case at all, fighter of the year imo should reward excellence and not penalize it

he won more fights, accomplished more historically significant feats , and did it all in his opponents backyard. he defo did more to earn it then josh, yours sounds more like a sentinmental argument of feeling good for the underdog

If it's who the most skilled boxer then hands down it would be usyk but for gritty performances I can look no further than Warrington

Warrington's sensational win over Frampton isn't quite like Usyk's three great wins this year and unifying all four belts.

In pretty much any other year (even the year Crawford became undisputed), Warrington would have done enough with those two wins.

I can't ignore Usyk's achievements though, and won't penalise him for being the favourite. He still cleaned out a strong division, and fought 3 tough opponents, all in their own back yard.

1. Usyk
2. Warrington

Maybe if Josh goes and spanks Valdez and Russell Jr/Santa Cruz next year, he might go one better.

Usyk, he become undisputed champion beating the other two best fighters in his weight class in their backyard.

He also annihilated a fringe level fighter in his backyard to top it off.

Josh deserves huge respect, people on this forum has written him off for years.

Usyk is a fighter of the year. He f*cking unified, undisputified and defended against top contenders. Who else did that?

I'd love for Warrington to win it. That man has done so much this year. He's been incredible. He's not a very gifted fighter, but man, he's a workhorse. I knew Selby wasn't all that, but I held Frampton up high. He was one of my favorite fighters, and I can't believe Warrington beat him.

He pretty much just cleaned out the British FW scene, and it was a high-caliber, elite one.

Usyk is without fighter of the year beating Gassiev, Bredis and Bellew are three extremely impressive wins as a whole. Easiest fighter of the year to pick in recent years

Josh impressed me this year. He’s more of a force than I gave him credit for. Tbf I read too much into his six stoppages. He’s not done better than Usyk in 2018. I’d say his stock has probably risen the highest though. His performance against Carl was the business.
