I thought he was really unlucky against Martinez. I had him winning that one. The Sturm one probably could've went either way but I actually had Sturm just shading that one.
I had him winning both, if anything the Martinez one was the closer one IMO.
Murray's problem was that he never went out and TOOK the fights if you know what I mean. He never pushed the issue and made it clear that he was the better fighter. Too safety first and that cost him in those fights. Especially being away from home.

Prob all fairly easy to make, decent paydays, and while the underdog fights he could win.
Nah , maybe 2 years ago , but not anywhere near that level now .
Been a good servant to the game tho .

But because he will now be seen as below the level, the likes of Eubank will be queuing up.
Those paydays will be there for him if he wants.

Yeh spot on that. He was just too one-paced and one-dimensional as a fighter.
There are times when you have to go for someone in a fight, but he never seemed to change gears. Even when he was winning in big fights (Martinez/Sturm) it was always close enough that you could understand people seeing it another way.

He's had a good career, should have had a world belt in at least one of those two mentioned fights, so that's unlucky really, but yeh you have to think if he could have found some more gears and had a rocket up his arse in a few fights then his career might have gone up to that next level.

I've always been a fan of Murray but I'm glad to see him hang them up. He was never going to trouble any of the big players in the division at this stage of his career, he'd have become a gatekeeper.

Sad to hear he's not made the money he'd have liked from the sport. Getting stiffed that night in Argentina must play on his mind as he'd have become an instant millionaire, essentially.

Great servant to the sport, I wish him all the best, he's pretty decent as a pundit actually, I remember him winning Prizefighter years ago, think it was only the 3rd one after Rogan and Sexton won the Heavyweights, had a war with Renda in the final I think it was, unlucky not to be a world champ, went over to Argentina and got robbed when Martinez was at the height of his popularity, had him down twice but the ref only called one, even still I thought he done enough to win by a couple of rounds

the sturm fight was most definitely not a robbery, i had sturm winning by a point and lets remember it was ruled a draw and not a sturm win. it was matt macklin who got legit robbed vs sturm. he beat up on sturm in at least 8 rounds.

i think i mightve had murray beating martinez , though i think he lost the first 3 and last 2 at least

Still, he’ll probably stay in Horse’s top 30 for a few more years yet anyway.
 And still too high for some people, not to mention Andy Lee's Irish

Macklin definitely got robbed, I thought Sturm edged Murray who probably benefitted from Macklin's loss, there was a bit if a stink after Sturm/Macklin, didn't Freddie Roach and that comment? Either way Murray gets a draw and his reputation was enhanced and Sturm keeps his belt, everyones a winner :-?

Good luck to him.

He can look back and say he has done the absolute best he could with the ability he had. Some fighters with much more natural talent have acheived less than Murray.

The one regret is the Abraham fight though as Gilberto Ramirez beat him so easily a few months later. That being said Murray is also one of the toughest and most durable fighters I have seen over the last decade, the fact that a peak GGG is the only one to knock him out says something.

Not had things handed to him on a plate either. Martinez in Argentina, Sturm in Germany. However like I have said with other retirements it is a travesty we never had a fight between one of Andy Lee, Darren Barker, Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray.

That being said Martin can be proud with what he has done. :TU:

The man has faced some of the best and done more then anyone would have expected after his loss against Groves and if he says it's enough then he can hold his head up high and walk away with his pride and health in tact.

Sad to see him retire on a Loss at the world level, Personally I'd love to see him have one more big fight here in the UK.
Eubanks Jr., Saunders or even Williams wouldn't be a bad fight for the British Title as a final farewell at Middleweight.

Supper middle has options just as easily, a rematch against Groves, Degale, Rocky fielding could be an option and again Zach Parker for the British title if he wanted one more piece for an already stacked trophy case.

He should have early well. All those big fights on Sky under Eddie, Groves ppv, Sturm, £25,000 for Prizefighter, plus Martinez and GGG.

He's a good career.

Very unlucky not to get the nod vs Sturm and Martinez.
