Sonny Liston vs. Iran Barkley at 200
Sonny Liston vs. Iran Barkley at 200
Imagine a prime Sonny Liston transported to the 1990s. A heavyweight of his size was obsolete by then because of the size and skill of heavyweights of that era. Even contenders from that era that never actually held the title such as Lou Savarese, Frank Bruno, and Andrew Golotta would have simply been way too big for him and smashed him in the first couple rounds.
He would have been forced to compete as a Cruiserweight. In particular, I think it would have been interesting to see him against Iran Barkley. 195 might have been a bit rough of a cut for him, except today's 200 pound limit was not much under the 210 that he was at for many of his matches right before he boxed Patterson.
Two others that would have been interesting to see him against would be Leon Spinks or Bobby Czyz at 200 pounds .

Re: Sonny Liston vs. Iran Barkley at 200
Liston's weight was between 210 and 220, about 212 at the majority of his main bouts. It seemed to be his natural size. Anyway if we imagine him being dried to 200, he would have been still a more advanced boxer, than Barkley, despite being a competitor of much earlier era. With fit Liston I can only see him knocking such opponents out.
Re: Sonny Liston vs. Iran Barkley at 200
How about a Liston leaned down to 210 and then dehydrated down to 200, with 24 hours between weigh in and the match to rehydrate back to 210, against guys like Czyz, Holyfield, and Moorer. I think he could have been a competitive Cruiserweight. For that matter, the Patterson he beat twice could probably have made a good Cruiserweight.

Re: Sonny Liston vs. Iran Barkley at 200
It would be impossible for Liston to weigh in less than 210 pounds in his prime, but at heavyweight he would destroy Iran Barkley between 1 to 3 rounds.
Re: Sonny Liston vs. Iran Barkley at 200
Liston by first round kayo, streetfight Barkely owns him.

Agreed. Beyond stupid.

Possibly the worst Boxing related post ever. It's up there with Tyson Fury tweeting how he wanted his opponents 'sole ' ( as opposed to soul)Newbie_71 wrote: ↑21 Sep 2018, 20:43 Imagine a prime Sonny Liston transported to the 1990s. Newbie is it? What did Iran Barkley ever do to you man? Why you wanna do him like this?
Re: Sonny Liston vs. Iran Barkley at 200
Heavyweights of Liston's size were obsolete in the 1990s. Hmmmm..
Let me see ....
Mike Tyson - 5ft 9" 210 - 220lbs fit
Evander Holyfield- 6ft 2 - 208- 218lbs
Michael Moorer - 6ft 2 - 210 - 222lbs fit
Ray Mercer - 6ft 1 - 210 - 225lbs fit
Tommy Morrison - 6ft 2 - 210 - 222lbs fit
Chris Bird - 6ft 2 - 210lbs fit
So Sonny Liston 6ft 1" - 210lbs - 218lbs ,is amongst these averages. He also had an 84" reach..not to mention he trained to be lean...very little fat on him...he was naturally muscled. As he got older he fought above 220lbs regularly...
So it is a big claim that Liston couldn't handle the size of Lou Savarese when 5ft 9 Tyson obliterated him in a minute.
...so many more 90s boxers to mention...i just won't go there...

I think I would favor a prime Liston over any heavyweight in history not named Ali, Louis or Holmes. Maybe Lewis is 50/50 but the rest I'd favor Liston.evrenb wrote: ↑26 Dec 2018, 13:37 Heavyweights of Liston's size were obsolete in the 1990s. Hmmmm..

Regarding the topic question. He'd have Barkley for breakfast.
Re: Sonny Liston vs. Iran Barkley at 200
You think Lou saverese smashes sonny Liston to bits in 2 rounds? A very difficult statement to back up that one lol.

Re: Sonny Liston vs. Iran Barkley at 200
The reason I brought up Leon Spinks is because I was told that Leon Spinks and Sonny Liston are consistently rated among the lowest-rated Heavyweight champions. I found it surprising when I saw some of Sonny Liston's earlier matches on YouTube and he looked nothing like what I had heard. I had been told that he was called the "Big Bear" and was like Primo Carnera except not as big and that they were both owned by the mob. However, in some of his earlier matches he weighed from 208 to low 210s and actually looked skilled and talented. He was also not slow like I heard. Obviously, he was too small for the Heavyweight division today because the guys are huge.oogiebe wrote: ↑26 Dec 2018, 13:13LOL. Sonny was very skilled and not a slow cumbersome plodder, although Ali made him look like one. Keep watching his fights and other Videos on him. His story is maybe the most interesting and mysterious of all the HW's. You'll enjoy it and you won't have to go by someone else's opinion any longer!Newbie_71 wrote: ↑03 Jan 2019, 03:46The reason I brought up Leon Spinks is because I was told that Leon Spinks and Sonny Liston are consistently rated among the lowest-rated Heavyweight champions. No disrespect meant when I say,
I smell a newbie with a doobie.
Is there any other possible explanation?
Also.....I want to see the comments or documentation ANYWHERE ON EARTH that speaks to Liston and Spinks somehow being in the same basket of deplorables.
Spinks vs Liston (even at Spinks very very very best) might be considered attempted homicide in at least 35 states including Guam.
