Gervonta Davis: I'm Aiming To Headline a PPV By 2020
The WBA's "super" champion at 130-pounds, Gervonta Davis (20-0, 19 KOs), is motivated to headline a pay-per-view event by 2020.
Davis wants to ensure 2019 is a very major year for his career, and the first bout of that journey will land on February 9th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. He's going to face former three division world champion Abner Mares.
“In 2019, I want to make a big statement not only in the ring but by letting the boxing world know that I’m the next star. I’m aiming to headline a pay-per-view by 2020 if everything goes right. I have great fights lined up for next year, without looking past Abner," Davis said.
Davis' trainer, Calvin Ford, is very happy with the ongoing training camp for the upcoming bout.
He says Mares has been a potential opponent on his radar, for quite some time.
Ford expects his boxer to make a serious statement against Mares, and his boxer is likely going to pursue a knockout victory. Mares has only been stopped once, when he got caught cold by Jhonny Gonzalez in the first round several years ago.
“This is a great chance for us to go up against the great team that Abner Mares and Robert Garcia make. We’ve been watching them for a long time and we’re looking forward to it," Ford said.
“We’ve been doing this for many years. We know that when it’s time to lock in, we’ll be locked in. Sparring has been going well. We’re just taking our time and doing what we have to do to get ready. We have a great team and everybody is doing their part. It’s our time to show what we’re capable of.
“On February 9, that’s when Gervonta Davis is going to step up and show the world what he truly is. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

Needs to definitely be active in 2019, fight some good names.. He says he has great fights lined up for 2019. Let's hope it's true..
But he'll need to fight known names.. Also his PPV fights would need to be against top opponents..
Davis vs. Garcia would be a PPV
Davis vs. Loma would be a PPV - ESPN would want the rights to that though,
Now truthfully.
IMO.. I don't think Davis has the personality to be a PPV Star. He has a look, he sounds dumb on interviews..
He most likely would be the 'B side' for his first ppv, if it's against a good name.
He's already turning into a Broner/Mayweather type character too..
I'm wondering when his Mayweather promotions contract is up..

Are you expecting "Tank" Davis to just steamroll over Abner Mares?

Mares is still competitive I think. He might be too small. But eventually I see Tank to work him down to a mid to late stoppage. I will not be surprised if it went the distance. Mates can take punishment. I could see him being stopped on his feet.

Davis is the only candidate to be Floyd's heir, right now.
This is my opinion, of course.

Yes, definitely.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑29 Dec 2018, 12:21I kinda agree. But he’s been neglected IMO. After his Mayweather contract he should just remain with PBC..
He also needs to build his character a little too.

Who knows? is his team suggesting potential bouts between Gervonta Davis and the likes of Vasyl Lomachenko, Gary Russell Jr, Leo Santa Cruz, Josh Warrington may be in the works?

If he gets managed better, Davis has a real chance of moving to the top of the heap in boxing overall. He's young; strong; exciting. Just needs better management/matchmaking. I feel like I never get to see him enough; certainly against more interesting opposition.

I feel 2019 might be his year.
Re: Gervonta Davis: I'm Aiming To Headline a PPV By 2020
I'm not even sure if he's even a draw right now. Lomachenko is probably doing better numbers, and he has yet to headline his own PPV.
Re: Gervonta Davis: I'm Aiming To Headline a PPV By 2020
well hes largely been an undercard fighter so far. all but one of his title fights have been undercard fights and he was the away fighter for the one that wasnt, hes obviously not much of a draw yet even though his side used his drawing power as a reason not to fight loma yet ('lomas not big enough')
usually at least a guys a regular headliner first before becoming a ppv headliner. he does have top talent though imo

Fair post, Jam. Davis is what, 24? He'll be testing the waters as a PPV draw in 2019. Seems to me he has the goods.jamamb wrote: ↑29 Dec 2018, 20:11 well hes largely been an undercard fighter so far. all but one of his title fights have been undercard fights and he was the away fighter for the one that wasnt, hes obviously not much of a draw yet even though his side used his drawing power as a reason not to fight loma yet ('lomas not big enough')

Headlining his next 3 cards is gonna help. See what kinda figures he pulls on tv.. he needs to get intelligent. He’s still young let’s not forget.oogiebe wrote: ↑29 Dec 2018, 20:24Fair post, Jam. But like they said. They got 2019 mapped out. 3 fights it’s gotta be. Needs to be back at his best. Needs the Pedraza performances IMO
Re: Gervonta Davis: I'm Aiming To Headline a PPV By 2020
I'm hoping PPV's cease to exist altogether.
Gervonta in the big fights we all want to see him in by 2020 would be sweet though.
