Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
Re: Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
the last kd has been really overblown imo as some heroic back from the dead rise, basically its just a guy getting up late in the count. he was pretty well recovered too. often when guys take a long count they are actually the most aware of there situation compared to guys who just immedaitely start trying to get up. there is more thought involved with waiting a count out then instincitvely just trying to drag yourself up
to me its more remarkable that for example george groves even managed to get up at all from the kd in the second froch fight, even if it was stopped

Jesus Christ we’re ALWAYS bashing refs on this forum and when one finally has a good night in a big fight we start knocking him
Re: Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
lol 99 percent? based on what? i say that 73.4 percent of refs wouldve let it go ontiny_acres wrote: ↑29 Dec 2018, 11:53I agree 100%Onetimeonly wrote: ↑29 Dec 2018, 10:43jameswilson wrote: ↑29 Dec 2018, 07:59 I think we’ve come to a reasonable consensus that the ref did a great job in the Wilder v Fury fight.obviously made the right call. Nobody without an agenda could have complained if he waved it off. Best part was him admitting the final round of a title fight is a different scenario. Too bad Steele didn't have that integrity. Meldrick would be in the hof.
I'm glad the ref let it continue. But I would of stopped the fight if I was in his shoes as would 99% of all referees
fury was alert and its the 12th round of a big fight. reiss made the right decision and you wouldve made the wrong one. lots of american refs let things go on long anyway, no way is reiss the only one out of 100 who wouldve let it continue, thats just the wilder in you talking

cortez, or whoever suggested that fury was eyes shut and looking obviously out cold, thats not true at all, thats just nonsense, as is the stuff about 99 percent of refs or 9 out of 10 stopping it , no way, loads of refs and especially american refs will stop things later rather then sooner

OMG, put it to rest. Fury was alert and watching the ref. Fury took every second that was given to him to get up, but in my view, he could've gotten up much earlier. Enough already!

I hope it doesn't set a dangerous precedent, where other refs overlook Fury's genuine recovery (albeit time-aided) and let fights run because it's the new popular.
It would've been more luck than judgement without the walking assessment, and of course that brings its own debate. The ten-count's there to respect the seriousness of concussions, so more leeway's a recipe for increased brain damage.

Show me the rule for time allowed for a ref to check the state of a fighter afte the gets up?Grilling Machine wrote: ↑30 Dec 2018, 00:33 I hope it doesn't set a dangerous precedent, where other refs overlook Fury's genuine recovery (albeit time-aided) and let fights run because it's the new popular.

No ref lets the the opponent jump on his man at the end of the mandatory 8. There is always a wiping of the gloves, are you ok etc.
Re: Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
Exactly, Tyson even puts his arms up for it till the ref knocks them away and orders he walk up and down. Maybe the seconds did aide him, we'll never know, but he never looked like he was going to go again to me.

Ref did a great job,if anyone want's an example of a bad referee then look at Wilder Ortiz and the extra time he got to recover after the 60 sec break.

Joe Cortez saying he would have stopped it is just further proof Reiss called it right!
Re: Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
pretty much the only ppl still moaning about reiiss or saying everyone else wouldve stopped it are the ones who are salty wilder didnt win
Re: Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
Reiss is a good ref. Cortez was an absolute shambles of a referee.
Re: Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
I think more refs need to be like Reiss. We need some consistency. Take MMA for example. Very rarely get an unjust stoppage.

Re: Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
I have not read a single post that did not compliment Reiss on the superb job he did.
The only debate that was brought up was from the comments of Cortez saying that he and most refs would of stopped the fight.
I tend to agree with Cortez that most would of stopped it.
BUT and it is a big BUT. Reiss did an excellent job and I and from what I can tell everyone was thrilled that he let the fight continue.
Fury showed so much heart in the final round.
Re: Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
Cortez was involved in more than his share of poor refereeing. I hold his comments up as much as I do Don King talking boxing pensions.

Re: Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count
Bang on. I rewatched the fight today and wilder really is an awful boxer. Terrible. It’s lucky he’s got incredible power otherwise he wouldn’t be top 20. Not technique at all. Can’t hold the centre of the ring. No ring generalship, nothing. Fury was dictating even when he’d boxer on the outside or hold the centre. He even threw a few McGregor hammer punches. WTF. Miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss. Then finally caught a tired, not best of shape, not match fit good fighter. Then miss miss miss again. Ortiz was ruining him in their fight. Shame a 75 year old can’t sustain that for 12 rounds really
