Chris Eubank Jr links up with Team Mayweather coach Nate Vasquez

"Chris Eubank Jr links up with Team Mayweather coach Nate Vasquez"

Chris Eubank Jr has revealed he has finally hired a full-time coach ahead of his British showdown with James DeGale on 23 February. The super-middleweight confirmed he had linked up with Nate Vasquez, who works out of Team Mayweather’s gym in Las Vegas. Vasquez, a former boxer himself, trains boxers and MMA fighters and joined Mayweather Boxing Club after doing an apprenticeship with Jeff Mayweather.

Eubank Jr has always been criticised for not having a full-time coach, and the 29-year-old believes adding a regular trainer will help him reach the next level. ‘I’m not taking this fight lightly. I’ve got a new team around me and we’ve been working on a lot of new things,’ Eubank Jr said. ‘I haven’t really had an official trainer. Ronnie Davies has been with me my entire career, but he doesn’t actually train me. I’ve kind of just done my thing, I’ve trained myself pretty much.

‘I’ve been working with a man named Nate Vasquez from Las Vegas. He’s been living with me. ‘It’s good to have a solid guy that’s with me 24/7 working with me on specific things I need to do. ‘Instead of me going through the motions and trying to beat guys using heart and determination. Now we have strategy involved. This is going to take me to the next level.’

Thoughts? :-?

Several years too late, I would think any benefit now will be negligible...

I don’t know. You could be right… and to be perfectly honest with you, I suspect you are.

However, the Brit is only 29 years of age and I believe his main flaws relates to his reluctance to pay attention to his team during bouts and also poor strategy.

I don’t believe that Vasquez is capable of implementing huge changes in Eubank’s general boxing ability, it’s clearly far too late for that, but if he manages to gain the Brit’s trust, he might be able to provide Chris with the ability to adapt during bouts.

I do feel that Eubank Jr. was capable of beating Saunders and Groves, but he ignored his team and kept making the same mistakes over-and-over again in those bouts… and only adopted a successful approach when it was far too late. If he made those changes sooner, then he may have avoided those defeats.

It seems that the entire boxing world has highlighted Eubank Jr’s flaws, since they seemed so obvious, and he has finally taken onboard the advice he’s received.

I do expect to see an improved version of Chris Eubank Jr. by the time he enters the ring against James DeGale, but I’m not sure if it’ll be enough to secure a victory, unless ‘Chunky’ really is far past-his-prime.

If it's true and Ewbank can change his mindset, then we may possibly see the lad fulfill his potential. Maybe not in one fight, but during 2019.

He could link up with The Almighty himself or Thanos and I'd be willing to bet that Jr still won't listen.

He's pushing 30 and has been told all of his career that he's a 'gamechanger' despite no evidence to back this up and all of a sudden he's going to start listening?

Not a chance as far as I'm concerned.
