I’d love to have seen Floyd 'easily' beat Paul Williams.
For me Canelo is a level above Williams and the same weight.
Very very different fighters. Alvarez has a shorter reach than Floyd despite being slightly taller.

I’d have loved to have seen it at 147, significantly taller, significant seven inch reach advantage. I just think he had tools that would have made it very tough for Floyd, good chin, good stamina, good skills.

I would have loved to seen what Mayweather did with that.
But it would be harsh to criticise PBF's legacy by saying he didn't take on a belt holder naturally 4 divisions bigger.

I’m not criticising his legacy. And Williams was a WW when Floyd was a WW. This isn’t some mythical could never happen fight, it was talked about at the time when they both were making 147.

In terms of being a p4p #1 Mayweather's record is poor. The only fighter with a worse one in my lifetime is Roy Jones.

Agree totally. Although at least RJJ put himself in serious peril going up to heavyweight.

He also fought prime Toney, rather than waiting years for him to lose.

I can accept Toney. But Ruiz was hand-picked...as was the ref...

Mayweather fought a lot of has-beens. Jones fought a lot of never-has-been-and-never-will-be types.

But how hand-picked can a heavyweight opponent be, when you're a pumped up middleweight?

No one hates John Ruiz more than I, but in fairness to him he was overpowering plenty of names before and after little Roy bossed him. Whatever anyone says now, that was perceived as a very risky fight going in. And it could have gone wrong for him at any moment.

Can anyone point to that risky fight Mayweather signed himself up for? No, me neither.

I must say, I'm indifferent to Jones, but he did genuinely try to make fights--Benn, Eubank, Collins, a Hopkins rematch when Hopkins was long-reigning middleweight champ, Calzaghe--and they all baulked. Two of them did fancy it years later once Jones was safely nullified. Floyd I imagine appreciated that matchmaking.

Agree on Floyd points here. It's a shame we never have or will see FMJ pushed to the limit. I would bet he'd have succeeded, but given his resume, I just can't really hold him up high.

I'm going to be controvesial here and say another P4P #1 with a resume that.... oh I don't know how to phrase it.... you cannot question who he fought..... but perhaps a sign of the era..... but I've always thought it was a shame Hagler didn't have many great middles in his era. He cleaned out, fought practically everyone he could have.... one or two exceptions..... but if he was in todays era I think there would be a lot of money for him in catchweight contests. Hagler's most famous victories were against naturally smaller men.

But again I feel the lighter weight champions, and not just Mayweather, seem to get condemmed for moving up - but the heavier guys get applauded.

For me, Hagler stayed in one division and said come and get me. In that era, and before, moving up a division was a huge achievement. But now with draining most of the fighters earmarked for greatness start 2 divisions below their true weight class anyway. Then they use weight hopping as a way of avoiding fighters...

Hagler just said I'm here. I'll fight you. His record is very good. He beat some top contenders before winning the title and afterwards. Most of all...his career doesn't leave the same bad taste...

Mayweather - Williams would have been great to see. I think that would have shown us just how good Floyd actually was.

As it stands, he’s best of his generation but there’s still question marks remaining when it comes to chat about all time ranking.

As mentioned above plenty of times, the big ‘names’ on his record had seen better days.
Considering how close an old version ran him ( arguably a draw ) a slightly younger DLH would have beat him. Mosley would have caused him lots of trouble but more than likely come up short and Manny would have certainly made it interesting.

i dont know how the hell people use the dlh and cotto fights against fm. he was giving up a weight division, they were some of his best performances.

but that travesty with the japanese kid. goodness, i thought fm would play with him and put on a show, but i guess both came for a ko, and 1 got it!

TBF, De La Hoya started as a lightweight? And Cotto started out as a LWW. Not like he fought fully blown LMW’s..
