World Level British Heavyweights
I seen a recent Khan interview, it was just before the Whyte v Chisora fight, where he talks about the fighters and mentions that they are both British level. He then corrected himself and said he thinks Whyte had won a European belt.
Obviously Whyte has now proven to be higher than that, and would be unfair to say Chisora is British level as he beat Takam who would be classed as Euro level.
It got me thinking about who is ‘World level’ at heavyweight. You’ve got the big three that goes without saying, then Povetkin, Ortiz, Pulev etc. Who are both also considered elite.
Hughie Fury has mixed it at World level but been beaten twice, so fair to say he’s more Euro standard but the likes of Joyce arguably higher than that.
General thoughts on this?

Re: World Level British Heavyweights
The elite heavyweights are the unbeaten ones. In this scenario anyway!
So Wilder with a win over Ortiz, Fury with a win over Klitschko (and pretty much over Wilder) and AJ with wins over Klitchko, Whyte and Povetkin.
Then I’d argue the world level guys are the ones with significant wins, have something about them with the eye test, and have mixed it with the elite guys and just come up short. So in no order, Whyte, who did average against AJ, but has wins over Parker & Chisora, Povetkin, who did better against AJ than Whyte, and has decent wins in the past, Ortiz who showed he was neck & neck with Wilder whilst also beating Jennings by stoppage, Parker could also be viewed as this with his wins over Hughie, Ruiz & Takam, whilst going the distance with AJ and Whyte.
Pulev arguably too.
Jarrell Miller is below world level, and he’s knocking on the door, alongside Adam Kownacki. It really is a matter of opinions, you could argue Takam, Chisora, Breazeale are knocking on the door but two of these have recent defeats, the other, Breazeale, is a questionable fighter.
There’s guys like Jennings, Browne and Hughie Fury that were in higher estimations not too long back but have received a rough run, and you don’t know where to rank them.

Whyte is a proven top 5 Heavyweight now. Unlike Khan who has never done nothing at welterweight.

So he has done a lot?
Re: World Level British Heavyweights
Both Whyte and Chisora are World level, cause they defeated today's top fighters. The likes of Hughie, who tried World level, but failed, are more fitting for domestic level. Today there're 4 World level HWs in Britain, they're Fury, Joshua, Whyte and Chisora.

Hughie Fury isn’t even world level. He hasn’t even fought never mind beaten a decent Euro level opponent.
Re: World Level British Heavyweights
pulevs easily decent euro level, parker would be too if he were euro....lol those just bulgarian and nz level guys now?
Re: World Level British Heavyweights
Exactly that.
Hell I would have argued that Pulev could have been considered top 5 active heavyweights in the world when he was supposed to fight AJ

Joshua
Fury
Whyte
Are the only British world class heavyweights.
Chisora and Hughie Fury miss the cut.

Re: World Level British Heavyweights
I tend to trust my eyes first, I've been watching boxing long enough to generally tell the difference, though occasionally someone is worth more than the sum of their parts, and their record will show that. I would say the big 3, then Whyte, arguably Parker and Povetkin are genuine world class.
Pulev is someone I can't warm to, he has a few decent wins but look at him, he is not a world class fighter, he's a limited plodder, Euro level who would have been ironed out by anyone in the top 20 of a stronger era. The 90's for example.
Re: World Level British Heavyweights
Ok, well no one is talking about the 90's. I do not believe world class is judged by what someone would do in another era. World class is the best in the world at this moment in time. Whether he would be "ironed out" by a top 20 all those years ago does not mean anything today.
As it stands, today, he is a world class operator. Top 10 today, arguably top 5-6 previously.

Re: World Level British Heavyweights
Khan’s reasoning was a little off but he predicted a late stoppage for Whyte to be fair. He probably sees himself as World class and on the fringes of p4p
Joe Joyce looks as though he could enter that top bracket once he gets that big win against one of the other contenders.

I take your point. Pulev is pretty crap, but world class.tobyh5 wrote: ↑08 Jan 2019, 09:29Ok, well no one is talking about the 90's.
