With a lot of threads on the 70's and 80's, I'm reminded of one of my earlier exposures to the Brit's rabid boxing fans was when I saw John H. Stracey vs Carlos Palomino. An entire crowd at Wembley chanting, "Straaaaaaaaay-ceeeee" in unison and majestic! It was very intimidating and figure it was like a huge advantage to the home fighter. Just thought I'd share.

When Carlos Palomino was inducted into The West Coast Boxing Hall Of Fame a few years ago he commented on His fight with Stracey. Palomino asked Hedgemon Lewis(who had fought Stracey)what he should prepare for when he fought Stracey.. Lewis said that Stracey's strength was a factor to why he lost to the Englishman. So Carlos employed lightheavyweights for sparring partners.Palomino said in his speech that when Stracey tried to outmuscle him inside he pushed him away without any difficulty. Watching the film of that fight Stracey was certainly crestfallen gasping for air on all fours from Carlos's body punches.

Good insight. Yes, Palamino was just too powerful and wore Stracey out. He was a punishing body puncher.

Back in 2008, I was a young lad still living in England and was actually doing work experience at a newspaper in Liverpool where they said there was some kind of event (I forgot specifically) at a school there and that there would be two "celebrity athletes" on hand and they were Amir Khan and John H. Stracey. Some people had heard of Khan and nobody knew Stracey so there I went chatting it up with both, more specifically Stracey as Khan was a bit more shy and less interesting. Talked to him about his fight in Mexico City vs. Napoles and such and got an interview with him. He's a really nice guy with a lot of personality, he was in good spirits and from my understanding is still that way and has lived quite well. I have a friend who sees him fairly often at events in that area but I'm not sure Stracey lives there I think he still lives in London.
