Pick a fighter to go further than people think
Pick a fighter to go further than people think
I think it's fair to say that if we were to rewind 18 months/2 years, when he was in a close fight with Kiko Martinez, that not many of us would have predicted that Josh Warrington would end 2018 with deserved wins over both Lee Selby and Josh Warrington.
So here's a little game, whose got a suggestion for who might be the next fighter to 'do a Josh Warrington'? Doesn't have to go and win world titles, but someone who will surpass the level that most predict him to achieve?
Doesn't necessarily have to be British.
I suppose if there's any miserable bar stewards out there we can have suggestions for the opposite as well. Anyone you think won't achieve anything like the stardom they're currently projected for? Again, that can be someone hyped as a future world champion who you don't think will get that for it can be levels below that.

I'll tell you one.. the German Heavyweight prospect- Tom Schwarz. Almost every comment I've seen on him says he's rubbish. But I think he's good - big, strong, very young for a heavyweight and improving every fight. Not saying he's definitely gonna be a world champion, but I fully expect him to be a European champion and be a fringe world level guy should sneak into the top 10.- so that will be against every other prediction I've seen on him.ElJefe wrote: ↑07 Jan 2019, 20:24 I think it's fair to say that if we were to rewind 18 months/2 years, when he was in a close fight with Kiko Martinez, that not many of us would have predicted that Josh Warrington would end 2018 with deserved wins over both Lee Selby and Josh Warrington.

I think Oleksandr Usyk will be a huge force at heavyweight when at least half of people are saying he's too small.

Someone like a Eubank might exceed people’s expectations, if he goes on to beat Degale that would be a good start, and if it’s true that he is learning from a new trainer then who knows.
I’d throw Dave Allen out there too, as many predict he’s no better than British level but if he were to get in shape then maybe could pick up a Euro trinket.

A hot one from the colonies;
George Kambosos, Jr. (15-0, 9 KOs)
Nuggity Aussie lightweight. Got a big signing last year, ready to hit the big time in a couple of fights.
I think he will 'do a Warrington' mainly because no one outside Australasia has actually heard of him, so he will fall automatically into that underdog role.
As he matures, only 25, the power is coming, he already has fast hands and a good engine.
Right now I think he could give Postol a tougher night than Taylor did.

Re: Pick a fighter to go further than people think
I agree. The majority seem to pick against him in all "the big 3" matchups - vs Fury, Joshua and Wilder. While I give Usyk real chances of outboxing Joshua and Wilder.Skalamanga wrote: ↑07 Jan 2019, 20:29 I think Oleksandr Usyk will be a huge force at heavyweight when at least half of people are saying he's too small.
Btw, as I mentioned Fury, I can relate him to the subject of this thread. Most of people pick Joshua over him and I pick Fury over Joshua. Actually the majority was picking Wilder to KO Fury, but I was favoring Fury even then.
Re: Pick a fighter to go further than people think
Agree with Usyk. I think he has a very good chance of becoming a unified title holder.
Re: Pick a fighter to go further than people think
I think Golden Gloves winner Jermaine Franklin might do something in 2019. unbeaten in 17 fights and possibly 2 or 3 fights away from being a reconised heavyweight. 2019 should see him fight his way up the world rankings.
In the middleweight division keep an eye on Christian Mbilli. Unbeaten in 13 fights with 13 ko's and is a world youth champion for what thats worth.

On the opposite -
Don't see Michael Conlan or Janibek Alimkhanuly reaching the heights expected of them

Re: Pick a fighter to go further than people think
Be a huge achievement if he can beat the elite level big guys.
You can only really put Holyfied in that class in recent times.
I wonder if he will try and bulk up and if so, how will he do it!

I think Ekow Essuman will do better than expected.
I really rated him as an amateur.
Muhammad Ali (British Olympian) when he turns pro I see him moving along very quickly.
Nathan Thorley- I see him exceeding British level. Maybe European.

Jack Bateson.
Re: Pick a fighter to go further than people think
Much hyped and much sucky James "The Beast" Wilson goes nowhere in 2019.
Re: Pick a fighter to go further than people think
Now granted I'm a fan of the guy so I might be a little bias, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Yordenis Ugas pulls an upset on Shawn Porter in March
Re: Pick a fighter to go further than people think

Re: Pick a fighter to go further than people think
If I had a time machine, the first thing I'd do is go back to about 2008-9 !
Just around the time that Anthony Crolla is 12-2 or 3 with losses to Al Hamidi (over 8!) and Sykes @ SuperFeather. While Ricky Burns has just been beaten up comprehensively by Carl Johansson @ British SFW level.
Everyone is thinking, "these two might just be watchable at the Doncaster Ice Dome for an vacant English title scrap - but I will post..
"Crolla and Burns - these two will multi world titles in the division above and beyond - you mark my words"
And then quickly return to 2016 to bask in the glory

Honest to a fault. I wasn't even on this forum when I started watching the big fella! So there's no evidence. I think it's just freakin' hilarious. He got sparked out by a guy named Jeff ford and I still watched him until he got smeared by Monte Barrett in his first real fight. I had some good ones too. Watched Wilder from before his Olympic Bronze; SRL from before Montreal Olympics, remembering him being robbed in some tourney before that in Russia, to name two good ones.
