Billy Joe Saunders and Gennady Golovkin hold talks over middleweight clash!

Post by Enlightened-One »

"Billy Joe Saunders and Gennady Golovkin hold talks over middleweight clash"

Billy Joe Saunders is still targetting a fight with Gennady Golovkin despite neither man holding a world title.

The Brit suffered a nightmare year in 2018 when he gave up his middleweight belt following a failed drugs test.

Golovkin was beaten by Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in their rematch to leave the Kazakh in limbo.

But Saunders' promoter allegedly has revealed talks could resume over a fight between the two former champions.

"We signed for the fight twice, they sent contracts and we signed them and sent them back," he told the Pound for Pound podcast.

"Will they want that fight with no titles on the line? Maybe money will talk, and in fact my son spoke to Tom Loeffler today so we're exploring that. We want to make the fight, it would be a fantastic fight.

"He'll never fight Canelo, they don't want that job, not after Billy did a job on David Lemieux."

Saunders returned to the ring in December when he took on Charles Adamu at light-heavyweight, weighing 18lb more than he would normally do.

The traveller thanked Tyson Fury last year for helping him stay on track.

He said: "I've done a lot of bad things this year (that) I'm not proud of but I have to thank Tyson.

"When I was going through that rough patch and acting a bit of an idiot, Tyson, who is probably the only man who can do it, put me in my place, had a good word and put me back on the right track.

"I was going down the wrong track. I have felt a little bit depressed all year and he's been through it so I have to thank him for his help."

Thoughts?

Billy Joe Saunders has previously signed two contracts to face GGG and had already agreed the terms of another (third deal) to fight the Kazakh (as confirmed by Tom Loeffler), had Gennady not faced Vanes Martirosyan during last year’s Cinco De May weekend.

It seems that allegedly, Tom Loeffler, Billy Joe Saunders and Gennady Golovkin really want this fight to happen at some point, since they’ve made so many attempts to stage this bout in the past.

If GGG signs with ESPN, then Billy Joe Saunders is one of the middleweights affiliated with that network, via Queensberry Promotions boxing contact provider deal with Bob Arum’s Top Rank.

I also feel that Saunders brings more money to the table than most of the other potential GGG opponents currently being discussed by the media, despite the fact the Brit doesn’t possess a world title.

I feel that Billy Joe Saunders has a bigger fan base and generates more revenue than the likes of Jermall Charlo, Demetrius Andrade and Danny Jacobs.

Perhaps I’m wrong about this, but I think there’s more money to be made in the UK, since the sport is more popular there than most territories around the globe.

An ESPN pay-per-view on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean (the US and the UK)?

USA PPV will probably demand that this fight b in USA-would have to start too early in UK to b on PPV in USA prime time.

Fury-Wilder was a PPV in the UK, despite the 5am early morning start time (the British viewers are used to watching bouts at this time of night - from 1am onwards). So the event may be staged in the US to optimise the American PPV revenue.

It won’t be a PPV event on US shores if the event is staged in the UK. If GGG feels that it’s more lucrative to stage the event in England, then he may choose that option, but I suspect the fight will probably be staged in New York or Las Vegas.

Yeah, LV would be my guess. It'd be good to see GGG in the ring against BJS and not Canelo again.

They both have nothing to lose, they must fight now. Golovkin is no longer a champion and so as Saunders, who furthermore is mercilessly blowing his career with his frequent withdrawals. This fight will be big without titles.

Anyone that is stupid enough to sign a contract with BJS deserves what they get. With BJS, there’s a better than 50% chance that the fight will be postponed or cancelled. Look at his last 10 signed and agreed upon fights and tell me that I’m wrong. You can’t.

#1 The fight will do very little money. GGG doesn’t need chump change at this point. If BJS had a strap it would be one thing.

#2 GGG will likely end up fighting once this year and will waste most of it dealing with BJS postponements, possible failed drug test or faked injury in camp. GGG needs big fights only at this point. BJS’s brain is scrambled eggs.

Hi EO
I edited the stuff I agree with from your post, which was all but the above.
BJS dosent have the fan base he should, given his skills.
He blows hot and cold with the boxing public, sometimes because his fights lack fan friendly action- usually denoted by the booing throughout, and he is relatively inactive- losing any momentum he has garnered. And also because he comes across as such a d*ckhead.

Seems like a strange choice for GGG, as Saunders has no belt and tends to cancel his fights of get suspended.

If they sign, it tells me that Golovkin's health condition prevents him from moving up in weight to face Smith, Ramirez or Urka...

Reading the quoted article, it doesn't sound like the talks are actually happening. BJS and Warren want Golovkin, but not the other way around.

From another article this morning:
[/Billy Joe Saunders’ promoter allegedly has revealed fresh discussions for a fight with Gennady Golovkin.

The BT Sport boxing promoter admits he is not confident the bout will be made, but insists they’ll make a new attempt to do so.

"Allegedly" is a key word, as the other article just refers to an original one. A rumor mill initiated by Warren.

"not confident" was the quote I was bringing up really. We are in agreement. Nothing more on this "fight." :TU:
