Jose Uzcategui v Caleb Plant 14/1/19 (ITV4)

Post by NoScoutingReports »

On Sunday, January 13, Jose Uzcategui is defending his IBF Super Middleweight World Championship against unbeaten top challenger Caleb Plant. Coverage will come live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Undefeated Nashville-born Caleb Plant promises to present a serious test for Venezuelan Jose Uzcategui in the latter’s first title defence. The 27-year-old champion won his interim IBF title with a ninth round TKO over Andre Dirrell in March before being stepped up to full champion due to James DeGale vacating.

26-year-old Plant has not been beaten in 17 fights with 10 knock-outs, becoming the number one contender with a unanimous decision win over Rogelio Medina.

How do people see this one going? Should be an interesting fight but I'm leaning towards a late TKO win for the champion. Shame about the awkward start time in the UK (1am Monday morning essentially) but it's hopefully a good start to their partnership with PBC.

Just went on the TV guide to record this show & the synopsis reads:

'Former world title challenger, American heavyweight Chris Arreola takes on Fred Kassi.'

Think that might need updating :o

I see Uzcategui winning this via KO.

He’s a good fighter who seems to be improving.

The fights takes place on Sunday. So early hours of Monday in the UK.

Shít for me as I don’t work Sundays so I would have tuned in if it was on Sat.

Looking forward to this, first ITV show from Haymon and first world title fight of the year, haven't seen a lot of either man, seen more of Uzcategui although I never seen the rematch with Dirrell where he picked up the title. I seen the first fight where he got clocked from Andre's uncle, that was scummy as fvck, Uzcategui was unlucky to get DQ'd that night the punch didn't look that late after the bell, Uzcategui also has a points win over Porky Medina as does Plant, I would've probably been dismissive of Uzcategui's loss to Korobov until Korobov gave Charlo hell the other week

Apart from the Medina win Plant's slate is quite thin but he's still unbeaten so should be a good fight, Uzcategui was being billed as a monster from some people especially when DeGale ducked him but I do remember one of his recent performances getting slated so he does have flaws

Im going for Uzcategui to stop Plant late

Uzcategui a good solid champion with a fan friendly style, Plant is a reasonable contender. Should be a decent enough fight. Uzcategui will win handily though.

Heard a rumour GGG may be signing with Haymon and moving to SMW, Uzcategui vs GGG would be a cracking fight.

Oh yeah, right. Of course.

I'm off work on Monday, so will consider staying up.

Actually, no. That's a lie. I'll tape it and watch it over breakfast on Monday.

Just got the chance to watch this from last night, wasn't expecting that outcome but well done to Plant! Built up a unassailable lead and dug deep later in the fight to see off Uzcategui, who seemed far from his best. Caleb couldn't miss with the left hook, landed some nice shots and also showed he has a solid chin when Jose managed to land.

Wasn't impressed with Uzcategui's corner mind, he clearly needed to up the tempo and throw more power shots as he wasn't going to get the decision however their was a serious lack of urgency from his team.

Did anyone else record on ITV4 and miss the final minute of the fight? It must have ran about 5 minutes over schedule so I didn't see the final minute and aftermath. Annoying.

Plant boxed well though, particularly early. Very sharp. Slowed down a bit towards the end as Uzcategui made it a bit more of a fight but it was too little too late. Was disappointed in Uzcategui to be honest. Against Dirrell he still took shots but was still moving his head and his hands. Perpetual motion. Much more static and hesitant against Plant though.

Plant vs Truax at some point this year? Caleb vs Caleb.

Well deserved win for Plant, after hearing a bit of his backstory I'm delighted for him, I had it 117-109, scoring 2 KDs early on set the tone and left Uzcategui with a mountain to climb after only 4 rounds, the knockdown in the 2nd looked more of a balance issue but no doubt a left hook landed, the KD in the 4th was legit as they come though, both guys exchanging hooks and Plant's got there first, the left hook was Plant's best shot of the night, he was able to nail Uzcategui clean with it as he was always hanging his chin in the air when trading

Uzcategui fared slightly better in the second half as Plant looked tired but he could never really make any dent in Plant who always came back firing to hang on to his lead and I thought Plant finished in control and avoided any of Uzcategui's attacks, good scrap to kick the year off

Plant was better than I expected him to be , good entertaining fight .

Plant v Eubank jr would be fun , providing he beats Degale .

When it's boxing or mma I always record it via manual record and go an hour after scheduled finish time.

Can't remember the fight but years back a close fight went to a decision and just as they announced the winner the recording had finished!
