Did they screw Canelo up by giving him the W?

Post by Onekrazyrican »

Im thinking that getting the W actually hurt Canelo. He did awesome in that second fight. Fought GGG toe to toe and was on even terms throught the whole fight. They gave him the W and it just made people hate his guts. Had he came up short I think people would be praising him.

A similar thing happened with Bradley-Pac. Imagine Bradley losing that fight then we find he fought with injuries in both ankles. That W against Pac ruined the rest of his career when he could have been praised for fighting a decent fight while injured.

I really hope DLH or another promoter with power starts eliminating the ridiculous idea casual fans have that you cant be great if youre not undefeated. Its killing the sport, forcing promoters to create that illusion.

Canelo would be perfect for that. Hes an exiting young fighter. Even if he had official losses to G and Lara hes proven good enough to be in the conversation of about whos the top middleweight today. Let the guy take the L then get him back in line. Have his next DAZN fights showcase his road back to the title picture. People will watch for sure. They might even root for him...

The second fight could have gone either way so I think people resent the draw more particularly because of that one crazy card.

I agree. Its amazing how quick people are to toss the robbery word around these days. IMO it has to do with that stupid illusion of invincibility. Even if he had lost to G he showed to be one heck of a middleweight that day. All of a sudden just because he didnt soundly beat the most dominant middleweight in years he gets all the hate.

Same thing with the Charlos. They had a rough night in what was supposed to be their coming out party and all of a sudden they were "exposed" and get a lot of hate.

Since when must a great fighter be undefeated?

I personally don't feel either fight was a robbery or even bad outcomes. I agree with the former poster that it was that one ridiculously wide card for Canelo in his first fight with GGG that created alot of the controversy. I think in the first fight it was easy to make a case for GGG winning, if there was a winner he was the winner, but a draw was still a fair outcome IMO. The second fight was very close as well, but I actually felt Canelo pulled it off, he fought a great fight landing most of the power punches while GGG may have been a bit more active, which was mainly due to his jab. But Canelo never took a step back which everyone claimed he would never do.

I don't think Canelo lost to Lara either. Lara lost that fight for himself by getting on his bike and allowing Canelo to control the entire second half of the fight with a sustained body attack.

The only man to clearly beat Canelo was FMJ.

Definitely created resentment by boxing fans. Can't blame Canelo for the decision, but fans need to assign blame and certainly in this forum, the Canelo 'dislike' seems fairly high.

As far as Canelo being hated, it's actually good for business. Even those who dislike Canelo will more than likely tune into his fights whether he was to win lose or draw in any of his fights. Some may dislike him based on the fight outcomes because they don't feel he won, but it won't change the fact they'll still watch his fights, whether they want to see a great fighter in action or they tune in with the hopes of seeing him lose. Not one outcome so far in Canelos career will or has had a negative effect on his career.

Good points. But to another poster's point, he also could've been a fan favorite, as he possesses all those attributes we actually love in a boxing great. It's all very interesting, but when it's all said and done, he'll have a great career and make oodles of money.

Deinitely didn't hurt his future earnings. Some hate from fans is good for that which was proven by Mayweather.

Your last sentence sums it up. A win is always better for business, and I personally don't think any of the outcomes of any of his fights have been controversial. The real controversy lies on those crazy scorecards, the one in the Mayweather fight that had him winning and the card that him winning wide in the first GGG fight.

I definitely wish people would quit being so hung up on the idea of every star boxer has to be undefeated. I'd rather just see the best routinely fight the best, and when that's the case everybody's bound to take a loss here and there. Doesn't mean they're still not a great fighter.

Everyone blew Canelo because he came forward instead of running the whole night but who cares? Good for Canelo for taking the skirt off in the second fight but he still lost the fight. It’s my true belief that Canelo was given way too much for not retreating in this fight.

Canelo did great work to the body but to me, GGG clearly won the second half of the fight and won enough of the early rounds to easily get the win. If martians came down to score this fight and left right after, there’s not one of them that would award Canelo the second fight. Not even close

Martians might be confused at the practice of our species getting into a ring to punch each other for the entertainment of others altogether

They sort of made that comment on "Return to the Planet of the Apes" when 2 of the Apes go back in Time or something to modern society, and one of them sees a Boxing match. He's aghast, and says "Savages!"

This is laughable. Canelo earned the win by outboxing and out fighting GGG.
Giving him an L when he earned the win would be criminal. In the history books there might be a little asterix but it would not help his legacy one little bit.

I doubt anyone would cheer for him if he got robbed lol. They would just say its only fair enough giving previous fights.
GGG fans would be unbearable even though deep down inside they know he got whooped.

Canelo has a huge fan base, but the majority are more fluent in spanish and dont spam the interwebs.

If you just relied on sources like boxing forums/twitter/youtube you would swear he was mostly hated but that is not the case.

GGG probably did have the most rabid fan base according to parts of the interwebs but the hype train is dieing quickly LOL.

Now his die hard fans want him to retire so he doesnt destroy his actually piss weak legacy

Yeah, they totally screwed him by not adding a loss, and awarding him a belt. Most of his fans are happy about it and Canelo doesn't even think he lost the first fight. Also increased that bank account and enhanced his life after boxing. Totally screwed.

I agree. Duran, Leonard, Benitez, Hagler, Hearns all had losses on their records and they are all legends who gave us a golden era. Same thing with the heavies Ali, Foreman, Frazer etc. The best would fight the best if a loss didn't mean they would disappear from the landscape. Controversial decisions wouldn't be that much of a big deal if the loser could get back on track with a couple of decent wins.

So what if some people hate Canelo's guts?

What does it matter?

He's still recognized as one of the world's best fighters and one of the sporting worlds wealthiest athletes?

You don't have to be loved to be successful. I don't think that Canelo is losing much sleep over some public sentiment.

Although the nearly 21,000 who embraced Canelo enthusiastically at MSG clearly showed that a substantial number of fans are fully supportive of the Mexican icon.
