How good was Mike Quarry?

Post by scorpio83 »

We know that Mike Quarry was Jerry Quarry's brother, but we also know that Mike had a different style from Jerry. Jerry was a boxer/brawler counterpuncher and Mike would fight as a boxer that could counter. If anyone watch Mike Quarry's fight against Bob Foster and Mike Rossman, how good was he?

Top 10 LH for his time at best. Good, certainly not great. Weak punch and not a great chin even though Foster could KO about any LH.

Seemed to lose every time he tried to move up a level. He had his moments I guess. For such a golden era of LHW's, he fought none of the big names outside of Foster. Went undefeated before getting waxed by Foster, but not a very deep resume. The "names" on his resume were all losses. And they were few. He wasn't Jerry.

Best wins? Mike Rossman and Jimmy Dupree? :maybe:

While not having much punching power, Mike Quarry was a capable fighter with good boxing skills during his prime years. Being absolutely destroyed by Bob Foster overshadows the fact that Quarry was competitive while facing other top light-heavyweights of that time. Of course, Foster was a tremendous puncher, one of the best ever in the light-heavyweight divisions.

Nice post. I do disagree with Quarry fighting other top LHW's. Glaring absences are Galindez; Conteh; Ahumada; Eddie Mustafa Muhammud; Billy Douglas and even Jesse Burnett. That's what's missing with Quarry to me.

Quarry also fought Yaqui Lopez, Chris Finnegan, Mike Rossman and Pierre Fourie, all of whom were contenders in the light-heavyweight division.

All losses, yes? (losses and a win vs Rossman) I don't hate the guy, but just think he 'falls short.'

Mike Quarry could slug with his opponents, but he had lack of power unlike his more famous brother Jerry and he was more of a slick boxer that could jab as their father Jack quoted in one of the newspapers.
