The downside is that you get second tier fighters protecting their second tier standings rather than fighting it out for contendership. Dilution is ruining the fight game.
It’s just evolved into something we traditionalists don’t like but it doesn’t really effect the top tier, boxing has constantly changed since day one and in an ever changing world maybe it has had to just to survive.
Not a bad point. Maybe it (multiple belts) allowed for more exposure, as casuals eat up championship fights. Could be, I won't deny that. But it dilutes the sport with relation to more competitive fights at the top tier, IMHO.
Don’t get me wrong mate I long for the old days there’s just no turning back now is there ? I once made the point on here that reverting back to to 8 divisions and one world title per division would leave fans with hardly any World title fights to watch in a calendar year, the guy rightfully called me on it saying fights between contenders trying to climb the rankings would replace and would be as big as most of the bullish!t world title fights we get now, just seems a bit out of reach those ideals now.

I get it. It is a business first indeed. What's funny is that those fights between contenders v. more title fights, would probably be fought between the same fighters. Ah the good ole days are gone forevah! :TU:

I remember that, it was just ridiculous. Earnie Shavers was in the Sky studio as I recall.

Then Bugner turns up on I'm a Celebrity a few years later claiming to be the oldest World Heavyweight Champion ever, and no doubt several hundred thousand who don't know boxing or any better believe that off the back of his WBF title win!

As a boxing fan, these binbag titles drive you nuts.

I'll have to see if I can get the choice of the telecast. Commentators can sometimes be quite comedic.

The WBFound is the original Federation, which changed its name to foundation in 2004. The WBFed started in 2008. Confusing I know lol

RJJ won a World Boxing Federation belt in 2000. This was a blue belt and is listed on BoxRec as the same organisation that is WBFed today. BoxRec also shows them as having World title fights from 1990 on.

World Boxing Foundation titles are listed from 2004 on and whilst they are blue now, they were initially black like the one Audley Harrison won.

Both say they began in 1988. I wonder if one is a breakaway from the other?

Yes I think someone from the Federation (possibly the then president) broke away to form the Foundation with that Mick Croucher chap after some kind of a falling out...

Wasn’t a bad belt or organisation around 15 years ago. Some good fighters held WBF belts. I remember Michael Hunter beating Frankie De Milo in a cracker around 2004 for this belt. Last few years the organisation have clearly lost their way a bit but they’ve deffo been worse ‘world’ belts out there.

Who was that little Thai dude who defended his WBF title about 40 times? Samsonboy dutch elite gym or something. Might have even called himself after a battery but that might have been one of the other Thai fighters.

BoxRec are wrong with listing the current WBF history with the original, they haven't updated a couple of WBFoundation titles from a couple of years ago either, so the title history's are inaccurate, unfortunately.
