Three-time world champion Jorge Linares will face a stiff test in interim super lightweight champion Pablo Cesar Cano - as the boxes will collide on January 18 at the Hulu theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, as part of card being distributed by streaming service DAZN.
In his second fight at super lightweight, Linares will clash with Cano, a Mexican fighter who is 29 years old and holds a professional record of 31-7-1 and 21 knockouts.
Cano is coming off an upset win over unbeaten Kazakh Ruslan Madiev in September in Las Vegas, after suffering two losses in 2017.
"The fight will be at 140 pounds and 12 rounds, I do not know if it's going to be for a title or an eliminator, but as it is I will be ready and I feel convinced that I can beat Linares and then go on to have the fights that we want - fights that are the championship," Caneo told ESPN Deportes.
Against Madiev, Cano looked good and the contest was playing out until a clash of heads created a bad cut on the Mexican's forehead and he could not continue. Thanks to the instant replay on giant screens he was given the victory by way of a technical decision, after the referee initially said that his cut had been caused by a punch.
On that same card on January 18, the return of former world champion Chris Algieri against Daniel Gonzalez is expected, while Demetrius Andrade will make the first defense of the World Boxing Organization middleweight title against Artur Akavov.

A guy who cuts up easier than Linares. Linares probably stops this guy on cuts if he doesn't just outright knock him out.

Linares-Cano Sanctioned as WBC Eliminator For Jose Ramirez Shot
The upcoming fight between Pablo Cesar Cano and Venezuela's Jorge Linares, which is scheduled for the 18th in the Hulu Theater of Madison Square Garden in New York, has been sanctioned as an official WBC world title eliminator at junior welterweight.
The winner will be in line for a title crack at current World Boxing Council champion Jose Ramirez, and that is enough motivation for both boxers to go all-out in what is expected to be an action fight.
"The motivation is not lacking in this fight, just the fact of facing Linares had already excited us, the fact of it being an eliminator has excited us much more. We have worked very well and when you work very hard things go well. Fighting with Linares is a good opportunity for me, I'm focused on giving the fight of my life," said Cano to ESPN Deportes.
The winner of the battle in New York, which will be distributed through DAZN, must then wait for the winner of the clash between José Ramírez and José Zepeda - which takes place on February 10.
Earlier this week, Linares (45-4, 28 KOs) told ESPN's Zone that he was smarter, faster and more experienced than Cano, but none of that will make him overconfident.

Linares' defeats have mostly come from tough Mexicans. I wouldn't count out Cano, but he does sometimes come just to lose like he did against Alan Sanchez. Very well might be Cano's last chance to snag a good victory.

He’s just too small at LWW.
But he struggles with 135.. kinda like Lemieux.
He got hit with that shot on the neck just below the ear. Boxers never recover from that shot!
