Demetrius Andrade vs Artur Akavov

Post by handsofstone »

Eddie's first show of the year early hours this Friday/Saturday on Sky, Andrade makes the first defence of his WBO Middleweight title against former title challenger Akavov, poor fight and poor card all round in all honestly, I'm not really sure what to make of Andrade these days, clearly a talented fighter but his primes been ruined by inactivity, fair enough he's a 2 weight champ, never lost a round in winning the title, had Kautondokwa down 4 times in the first 4 rounds but then coasted for the remainder of the fight, apparently he suffered an injury in that 4th so i'll cut him a bit of slack, only beating Culcay by SD was surprising as well

Only ever seen Akavov when he challenged Saunders for the same title a few years ago in Paisley, fair to say Saundrs was awful that night and even lost on some peoples cards, I had it a draw and I wasn't even that impressed with Akavov either, both men were poor and it was never a world level fight, Akavov's picked up 3 crap wins since and 2 of them were razor tight,

Even an unmotivated bored half arsed Andrade should come though with nowhere near the same problems as Saunders, wouldn't be surprised if Andrade fails to put Akavov away but he should win every round

What a mind-blowingly shite card.

Andrade defends against the weakest guy they could find who had the tag "ex-world title challenger" who wasn't clinically dead.

Linares faces a journeyman who couldn't beat a 60-year old Shane Mosley.

& Doheny defends his title versus the 15th best Japanese super-bantamweight.

Haha WTF first Doheny/Takahashi gets stopped out of nowhere then Andrade/Akavov, both world title fights which is disgraceful, don't get me wrong I thought just before this was stopped that Akavov felt a couple of they right hooks but nothing worth stopping, just shocking

It is hard to have too much sympathy for Akavov though as he was poor and offered very little at all, fair do's he was out of his depth but he never gave it a go the way Takahashi did against Doheny, not sure what to make of Andrade he bored me again, same as the Kautondkwa last time out he started off looking in the mood then slipped into auto pilot, content to jab his way to victory, he was dominant picked some nice shots but all in all a sparring session and he needs a test

Thanks for the overview. I didn't watch Andrade-Akavov, but expected that kind of fight only with no stoppage, so now I won't watch it full for sure.

Let's hope that the guy who screamed every time Andrade bounced a jab off Akavov's guard got hit by a bus when he left the area...

No one has really explained why the stoppage was so bad. Was Akavov in the fight? What were the scores? Was he taking too much punishment? Was it a bad stoppage merely because there were only thirty seconds to go?

Wow. I know linares is chinny but was a big surprise for me
First knockdown was not on his chin tho. It was on the neck around the ears I haven’t seen boxers recover from that.

Yeah, but any shot within a foot of Kahn's chin is a KD blow. :OhYes: (yeah, it was the same shot)

Maybe not, but he could have done a much better job of trying to ride it out, instead of trying to trade.

Thanks! That was behind the ear like the old Russian amateurs used to aim for. After the first knockdown he should have listened to the broadcaster and stayed safe. Looked like Cano too big and strong.

Andrade/Akavov Stoppage: That was really quite sudden. Seemed the referee had a date he didn't want to miss.

Its hard to have sympathy for Akavov because his effort was so feeble, its one thing to be a level or 2 below an opponent but to not try to make something happen is piss poor, still with 20 odd seconds left what was the ref playing at? Awful stoppage and without sounding too dramatic, one of the worst ive seen
