TJ Doheny vs Ryohei Takahashi

Post by handsofstone »

Doheny makes the first defence of his IBF Super Bantamweight title against Japanese challenger Takahashi on the Andrade/Akavov card this Friday, never seen either guy before but looking forward to seeing Doheny, still looks a poor fight on paper, Takahashi's record is mediocre to say the least, he has a points loss to Andrew Moloney but I don't recognise much else but my knowledge of the Asian seen is minimal, there is a couple of names that look familiar

Doheny outpointed Iwassa to win the title, Iwassa was blitzed from Haskins a few years back, Doheny's born in Ireland but fights out of Oz, i remember after he won the title, his management MTK tweeted to congratulate him and he had a right go at them for never taking an interest before, apparently if he comes through this then its unification next against Roman

Who do you see winning this one. I see both have wins over Pipat Chaiporn Doheny a split and Talahashi a UD. Can anyone see the upset in this one? Takahashi 15 with the bookies?

Doheny stops Takahashi in the 11th in a stoppage even by recent standards was quick and a bit strange, there was no doubt Doheny was way in front, he was by far the superior boxer, he had Takahashi down in the 3rd, rocked him with a straight right then clubbed him down with 2 lefts as Takahashi held on for dear life, Doheny was technically miles better than the crude Takahashi and was able to counter him with the left hand when Takahashi lunged in which he done all night, Doheny also seemed to hurt him to the body a couple of times as well

Takahashi was all over the place at times though, he'd throw the orthodox right hand but end up as a southpaw as his footwork was terrible, what he lacked in skills he made up for with bravery and effort and he just never stopped coming forward and was closing the gap in the rounds before the stoppage as Doheny tired

Doheny landed a couple of semi decent punches in the 11th then out of nowhere the ref stepped in and called it a day just as Takahashi was in the fight as much as ever, fvcking bizzare and uncalled for

I liked the look of Doheny though he's a cute sourthpaw, counter punches well and picks his shots nicely

Shame Takahashi got the call and not ine of the better Japanese Super Bantams (looking at you Wake, Oguni, Akaho, Teshigawara, Kameda, Omori even an Iwasa rematch)

Takahashi was open to the southpaw left of Shingo Kusano in his previous bout. Tough kid but woefully under skilled. Wouldn't be unfair to suggest he was the 8th or 9th in Japan.

Doheny impressed against Iwasa, but Iwasa always comes up short against southpaws (and looks dreadful in his first defense). Be interesting to see him in with a top challenger if the Roman bout fails to get made next.
