AJ's next fight?

Post by MasterG »

https://talksport.com/sport/boxing/4780 ... yson-fury/

This is interesting as AJ is booked to defend at Wembley 13th April so not sure if there would be any truth in this unless the Wembley date is scrapped.

Anyway. Jarrell Miller, a threat to AJ?

AJ walks through him, but a great debut for the USA Market plus keeps him busy whilst hopefully fury v wilder 2 with the winners fighting later in the year.

Not in the slightest. Wouldn't go past 5 rounds.

If he fights miller next and beats him apart from fury and wilder who else is there to challenge him? Or is he getting accused of being a chicken for not fighting just them 2? If i was joshua id fight whyte in april and miller in july

It would be really bad if AJ has 9 month break between the fights in the very prime of his career.

Miller looks bang average. Hand speed, foot movement and high quality range punching look like the tools a fighter would need to have success against Joshua and Miller has none of them

Miller is unproven and isn't any world beater. Outside the top three, it's a crapshoot. Who really poses a threat to AJ? Or Fury and Wilder really?

He is fit as a fiddle and should be fighting at least 3 times a year. If i was him id wanna fight every 4 months get 4 in a year between the age of 28 and 30 then tone it down to 3 or 2 that way he would/should of cleaned the division out

With the plummeting of popularity of AJ, I am suspecting Hearn does not want to tarnish the brand by putting on a Wembley show which ends up selling "only" 60,000* as the story would not be that it is a huge number, but that it is a huge drop in numbers and that there was a shite load of empty seats.

* I am just throwing out a number, fck knows how many it would sell, I just mean that I think that the tide has swung away from AJ towards Fury that the brand has taken a knock and a drop in numbers would cause a further drop with all the negative stories it would generate. After a perfectly sculpted career and brand with no missteps, they have completely cocked up this current stage of his career.

Joshua v Wilder or Fury will sell out Wembley in no time at all and be a massive PPV seller.

I think your underestimate Joshua’s popularity and overestimate Fury’s.

Joshua’s fanatics will come out in force no matter who he faces. Fury and Wilder wouldn’t sell out a stadium over here despite what people might think.

The Fury popularity thing has yet to be actually proved unfortunately. It’s all rumour and based on not very much. I can’t ever see him doing 60k+ in the UK against anyone other than Joshua and that’s because Joshua brings the fans.

  • I did not say that people would not turn out in force for AJ - I said he would still do huge numbers, threw a 60,000 into my post
  • I did not compare Fury's potential numbers with AJ
  • I did not say Fury or Wilder could sell a stadium, or even big numbers
What I did say was that Fury's popularity is on the upswing and AJ's on the downswing and stand by that. I also said that I did not think they wanted to risk empty seats, even if it was still a huge crowd and I stand by that. Fury has taken some momentum away from AJ and the brand which has run perfectly, is scrambling a little. Evidence is in all the interviews. They are defensive and aggressive.

It's a pendulum, probably. Fury, his background story and recent fight with Wilder and the rematch is in the news. AJ is not so much. I suspect the pendulum will swing the other way once AJ is active again.

The swing involved several factors, including: the fight; news of the rematch; and Fury's back story. AJ is simply looking for an opponent. Again, I suspect the pendulum will swing back once AJ has a foe and a venue.

It’s impossible for Joshua to force this pendulum back the other way all the time he isn’t fighting, but that’s the only reason he seems to have lost momentum. All this Joshua is in the shadows chat is pretty much nonsense. He might be a touch in the shadows when it comes to hardcore fans and those who watch IFL and the like but that’s not Joshua’s fanbase. His fanbase don’t tend to watch much other boxing at all I suspect!

I still bet if Hearn plays silly buggers again and books Joshua v anybody on the same night as any Fury/Wilder rematch then Joshua does much bigger numbers.

It’s just how it is and will be until he gets beat or starts stinking the joint out.

Hopefully, smarter heads will prevail and AJ's camp will open their eyes and see that the Champ needs to act like one. Didn't realize his fanbase was mostly casuals. Although he was marketed well coming out of the Olympics to recent times. Nice post.

He gets groups of women attending his fights. They treat it as a big night out, almost like a place to be seen. His fights are events. If and when they sort the Wilder/Fury thing out, they’ll be absolutely massive here.

I think that’ll happen next. He could make a splash in the States. They’ll hype the Miller fight big time.

On a slight side note, how big is James Corden over there? We are led to believe he’s conquering America with his chat show, but I find that highly unlikely!

I ask because Joshua will be on that immediately if and when his US debut is announced.

Corden isn't very big here, at least it seems. I don't particularly like that sort of show. It seems to be contrived in the way they try to be outrageous and/or hip, like the Cardi B. Episode.

You're cheerleading a bit now.

If they don't fight at Wembley in April it will be because they're worried about the numbers. Wembley isn't cheap and they need big numbers to make the profits they want to make. It's not part of some grand plan to crack the USA and get exposure in the states as they will try to spin it.

I don’t mean to be, when a fighter does 70,000 vs Takam and 80,000 vs Povetkin...well, it’s fvcking ridiculous to be honest. I struggle to get my nut around it. He’s caught the imagination for various reasons.

For me, the Fury story is better but he’s never attracting the casual types Joshua does. Guess it helps that Joshua tends to lay people out.
