Lennox Lewis seems to be constantly having a go at AJ,do you agree with him? If so why havent any of tgese former stars had a pop about Wilders previous opponents?

He's talking sh1t as much as I like him...
"Klitschko should have led immediately to legacy fights, which is why Lewis has been critical for these past 20 months."
Lewis' legacy fights (Tyson, Holyfield, Rahman) came right at the end of his career. After he won the title he fought Bruno, Phil Jackson then was sparked by McCall

Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
Lennox does have a point, at the same time I do find him short on praise for heavyweights in general. Anyway, more to the point - who's Josh fighting in April? It's about time that was organised, it's not that far away.

Ruddock was a legacy fight and it came before he won the title. Golota came mid-career. It took Lewis a long time to get to Holyfield due to insurmountable promoter and sanctioning body politics, and unexpected losses (his own and those of others).
That being said I bet Lewis envies AJ's crowds and the hype that surrounds him. Reminiscent of Jack Johnson resenting the popularity and acclaim of Joe Louis.

Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
Good points. Lennox may have resentment as it took a while for UK to embrace him since he was widely considered Canadian from his stint at the Olympics. He's still my all time favorite HW.Tuan_Jim wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 11:57 Ruddock was a legacy fight and it came before he won the title. Golota came mid-career. Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
Not sure he was ever embraced to be honest. He signed to Sky when 2% of British homes had a Sky dish and thus boxed mostly in obscurity. He was terrified of being booed versus Bruno in London and so they boxed in a half-empty stadium in Wales. He couldn't fill up the 5,000-seat Wembley Arena for title defences versus McCall and Botha, and he could hardly win over the public with his chat show appearances, having a Canadian-Jamaican accent, no charisma, no sense of humour, and a penchant for talking about himself in the third person. He was celebrated in the press for beating Holyfield and Tyson, but never truly crossed over.oogiebe wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 11:59Good points. I don't think Joshua is a likeable man on any level, in fact he's I find him detestable, but he's very much a right place, right time type of boxer, with so many planets aligning for him at exactly the right moment. Perhaps had Lennox been born 20 years later his hip hop raggamuffin persona would have appealed to the same dullards who are infatuated with Joshua. Ya get me blud.

Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
Bruno was popular because he was an imbecile who pandered to the masses by playing the lovable buffoon, Lewis on the other hand was much more focused on being a sportsman rather than a clown, hence why Lewis' achievements shite all over Bruno's.
AJ is in a different era where we have social media at hand 24/7 and it's easier to connect with fans using that, we only ever heard from our sports heroes when we were kids via an article in a newspaper/magazine or a TV interview.

Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
Agree that AJ is in the age of mass media and is benefiting immensely from it. A always thought Bruno was popular as he was the first legit HW on the world stage coming out of the UK in quite some time.banjo wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 12:43 Bruno was popular because he was an imbecile who pandered to the masses by playing the lovable buffoon, Lewis on the other hand was much more focused on being a sportsman rather than a clown, hence why Lewis' achievements shite all over Bruno's.

Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
You’re not wrong there. A lot of the mystique surrounding the stars has gone now, as there’s so much coverage of them via different media. It was hugely different in the 80s when I got into boxing.banjo wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 12:43 Bruno was popular because he was an imbecile who pandered to the masses by playing the lovable buffoon, Lewis on the other hand was much more focused on being a sportsman rather than a clown, hence why Lewis' achievements shite all over Bruno's.

Funny you should say that,i watched a Bruno v Lewis press conference recently and Big Frank was more embarrassing,Lewis really got to him then.banjo wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 12:43 Bruno was popular because he was an imbecile who pandered to the masses by playing the lovable buffoon, Lewis on the other hand was much more focused on being a sportsman rather than a clown, hence why Lewis' achievements shite all over Bruno's.

Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
Lennox likes to stir the heavyweight pot I reckon. He’s always having little digs and it’s worth noting he’s a bit of a mouthpiece for pay.
Joshua’s popularity is born out of being a heavyweight Olympic boxing champion at a home Olympics! He literally couldn’t miss after that. London 2012 was probably the biggest sporting occasion in this country ever.
Lewis should chill out a bit. He should relax safe in the knowledge he’d absolutely level Joshua, Wilder and a Fury in his prime. He sometimes needs to remember his time has been and gone.

Eh so what? He just wants to be relevant I guess. Found an outlet with PBC, so let him be a gadfly.lillywhite14 wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 13:42 Lennox likes to stir the heavyweight pot I reckon. He’s always having little digs and it’s worth noting he’s a bit of a mouthpiece for pay.

I just think he should be above such things. I love Lennox, he’s my favourite heavyweight, but the salty bitchy stuff isn’t really him.oogiebe wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 13:44Eh so what? I prefer to remember him as the laidback heavyweight beast with a very, very serious side when it comes down to business!
Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
I can understand that. I kind of separate Lennox as a champ and as a commentator (which I find is not as good as I remembered from HBO). His disposition as champ was perfect.lillywhite14 wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 13:47I just think he should be above such things. Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
Im always thinking is Lewis just stickin up for the American to gain brownie points with the American people because although he didnt connect with the british public, the American public hated him(it seemed this way anyway) plusdidnt he duck(not fight) bowe because of pay too? Also why didnt he give vitali the rematch he promised him? Its easy placing blame when you dont know the full story.
Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
He ended up pretty popular here in the US. It always seemed more contentious in the UK. To me anyway. Here it was Bowe ducking Lewis. And not so much complaints of him not rematching Vitali.thechump wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 14:22 Im always thinking is Lewis just stickin up for the American to gain brownie points with the American people because although he didnt connect with the british public, the American public hated him(it seemed this way anyway) plusdidnt he duck(not fight) bowe because of pay too? Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
we really are living in sad times if we don't even consider Lewis capturing the linear title from Briggs as a legacy fight

Re: Is Lennox Lewis right?
After he retired i think americans took to him and realised how good he was,the vitali rematch should of happened when both had a full camp, the bowe fight is similar to the AJ vs Wilder fight one has 1 belt and the other has the other important ones but LL seems to just media bash AJ.oogiebe wrote: ↑21 Jan 2019, 14:25He ended up pretty popular here in the US. Yes he does. Why that is, is anyone's guess.
