Curtis Stevens Heading To 154: Eyes Hurd, Lara, Harrison, Munguia

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Brooklyn puncher Curtis Stevens has set his sights on a move down in weight, as he eyes up some of the big names at 154 pounds.

Stevens, who shared a ring with fellow knockout artist Gennady Golovkin, is well known to those inside of New York and is recognised within boxing circles as one of the most talented fighters within New York.

The 15 year pro is still only 33, and is eyeing a run down at super welterweight in a bid to create an Indian summer to his career.

Stevens opened up about his decision to move down to 154, “The gym is full currently of talented fighters and we want to have champions in each weight class. Sadam Ali is at 147, Sergey Dereyenchenko and Danny Jacobs are at 160, so I wanted to take the spot at 154,” Stevens stated.

“I’ve always made middleweight comfortably, and I feel that I can be even more destructive at 154, so I’ve made the decision to move down in weight.”

Stevens hasn’t fought since picking up the IBA world middleweight belt last year, discussed his plans to start 2019 with a bang.

The former amateur standout stated, “I knock people out at 160 and 168 and I’m going to do that even more destructively at 154.

“I’m hoping to get a good fight in March time against a good opponent. I’m confident that a big fight will come off then and then I want the big names at 154.

“I don’t care who I fight really, the same outcome is going to come and that’s a Curtis Stevens knockout victory. Anyone with a belt at 54 I’ll fight; Hurd, Harrison, Lara, Munguia, anyone can get it. The minute these fighters feel my power at Super Welterweight they’ll know they are in for a hard nights work.”

‘The Assassin’ continued, “My aim is to become world champion at super welterweight that has to be the goal for me. I believe and my team believe I am good enough to win a world title at 154, it’s down for me to put in the work and make that a reality now.”

Curtis Stevens is not going to be making an impact on the world scene at 154lbs. He’s a naturally heavy fighter who has regularly competed (technically) as a light heavyweight. The American didn't really make an impact at 160lbs either.

It’s like when Chris Byrd moved down from heavyweight to become a 175lb-er, which resulted in him getting KO’d by no-hopers. The same will happen to Stevens (who is on the cusp of turning 34 years of age).

A much younger fighter possessing a soft belly would stand a much better chance of accomplishing this feat, rather than a ripped heavily-muscled veteran like Stevens.

I can’t recall that many occasions where a fighter made a legitimate move down to a lighter weight class and enjoyed success. And I’m intentionally excluding the lighter weight divisions where there’s only 3lbs or 4lbs difference between classes, as well as those that made a one-off or very short-term jump to a heavier weight class before swtiftly moving back down to their natural habitat.

He'd be an easy win for any of the names he mentioned.

Stevens is just "a guy."

Not a special fighter at any weight. I don't think a weight drop to 154 will make an impact for him.

More likely he'll be drained and become easy pickings for any hard banger at super welter.

Stevens is destined to remain little more than a fringe contender.
