Silver and Diamond Titles

Post by JohnMcMinn »

Can someone explain to me what the WBC Silver and Diamond titles mean? I see that the WBC Silver Welterweight Title is on the line in the Spence vs. Garcia fight, but the winner of the title isn't the actual WBC Welterweight champ. So what purpose does this title serve? Is it basically a trinket to put in the winner's trophy case?

I know it's probably a money making scheme to rake in additional sanctioning fees, but is there any legitimate reason for titles like this to exist?

You'll get answers, but I'm not sure there's a good answer.

As I understand it being the WBC Silver Champion is like a title that signifies you're the #1 contender for their main World Title.

I've only see the Diamond Championship BS used a few times, usually for mega fights like Pac vs Mayweather and sh*t like that. Basically it's just a bonus trinket for a mega fight.

I don't know if anybody keeps track of how many times a fight has had "Diamond Championship" distinction, but it's basically reserved for Superfights.

Oh and yeah both are just ways for them to rake in extra fees for no particularly good reason...unless you think the belts are really cool, and worth your money.

No that's not quite correct. The Silver title is just another micro-belt that the WBC can match as a vacant title or be defended or surrendered. WBC international. WBC international silver. They are all stepping stones in the WBC rankings. Diamond (I think like you) is their version of Super or Special.

Are there actually sanctioning fees imposed on diamond and silver belts?

These "honors" seem so trivial and bogus that it's hard to imagine that many fighters would want to fork over a portion of their purse for the privilege.
