For me it's classics for sure. Katsidis was impressive early indeed, he was a really tough fella.Covfefe wrote: ↑18 Jan 2019, 15:54Yeah, I enjoyed watching it at the time, this was the first time I’ve seen it since. Excellent fight. Huge fan of Marquez but Katsidis gave him hell in the first half of the fight.

Mark Kaylor v Errol Christie - Cracking fight; pure animosity between them.
Christie probably tried too hard to win, as daft as that sounds and Kaylor had a tad too much for him.

Carlos Ortiz vs Sugar Ramos 1
Ortiz gets up off the floor to stop Ramos in the 5th on a badly cut left eye to retain his Lightweight title, controversial ending but Ramos eye was bad by all accounts, hard to tell from the quality of film, Ramos put Ortiz down with a textbook lead right hand in the 2nd round but after that Ortiz controlled Ramos on the outside of the jab and countering the aggressive Ramos, in the 5th just after Ortiz landed a cracking right hand, the ref(BIlly Conn) stopped it where there was carnage in the ring afterwards and apparently they tried to force Ortiz back in the ring from his changing room to continue the fight
Ortiz stopped Ramos in the 4th of a rematch but doesn't seem to be available, I did find the KO though, Ortiz decked Ramos with a left after a barrage then the ref steps in as Ortiz batters him in the corner

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of those re-matches Ortiz had in Puerto Rico just don't seem to have been saved. Vailant, Laguna, Ramos. Sucks. His re-match record was incredible.handsofstone wrote: ↑23 Jan 2019, 16:39 Carlos Ortiz vs Sugar Ramos 1

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Yeah, he was a complete fighter and a great thinker. The Buchanan fight is miserable as much as I like Kenny. One guy in his prime, hungry for the title, the other one sticking around for paychecks. He looked pitiful in that one. I do think Buchanan gives him a challenge even in his prime though. I hope to meet Carlos Ortiz next summer in Canastota as I'll be making my first trip there for Juan Manuel Marquez' induction. I hear Ortiz is there every summer at the induction.handsofstone wrote: ↑23 Jan 2019, 18:19Yeah Ortiz was a very clever boxer, got out at a good time as well, pulled off a good number of wins after losing the title but once he was stopped by Buchanan, he knew it was time to gochrisjs1985 wrote: ↑23 Jan 2019, 17:06Yeah, unfortunately a lot of those re-matches Ortiz had in Puerto Rico just don't seem to have been saved. Watched Pernell Whitaker vs JCC.
I have to say, each time I watch I get more frustrated at the decision. It's clear as a bell that Whitaker won this fight. Still a great fight to watch and if you want to see a great fighter in so very many ways, Whitaker doesn't disappoint. Damn he could fight on the inside.

I bet at least 40 people in a bar. Pernell would own him 1000 times out of 1000 and maybe win 400. I refuse to rewatch it, since it's fresh for you. Didn't Pernell hurt him somewhere around midway and send Chavez into a bitch shell?

He was an extremely great Inside fighter. He was very strong inside. People forgot how that was one of his most underrated assets. Sweet Pea would give you angles and was not an easy target to cleanly hit. An all time pound per pound great by anybody's standards.oogiebe wrote: ↑24 Jan 2019, 21:42 Watched Pernell Whitaker vs JCC.

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Yeah, Chavez was outclassed that night and shamefully saved by the judges from suffering a loss. A disgrace, but a great fight to watch indeed.
Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Around the 7th, he stunned Chavez and the fight seemed to shift Chavez into confusion. He stopped throwing combinations and looked a bit bewildered.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑24 Jan 2019, 22:18 I bet at least 40 people in a bar. Pernell would own him 1000 times out of 1000 and maybe win 400. Freddie Mills vs Len Harvey
Mills KOs Harvey in 2 to become British and Commonwealth Light Heavyweight champion, he put Harvey down with a left but the camera seemed to miss it, Harvey got up still dazed and Mills tore in about him with both fists battering him upstairs and down, must've been 20 unanswered shots, a left hook caught Harvey flush and sent him crashing through the ropes and out

Gus Lesnevich vs Freddie Mills 1
Lesnevich KOs an insanely brave Mills in the 10th to retain his World Light Heavyweight crown, only highlights available but it was enough to see the savagery, the only person braver than Mills was the ref who allowed Mills to get put down 7 times, he was down 4 times in 2nd round alone and probably should've been stopped in that round, firstly Lesnevich had him whilst doubling up the left hook and the next 3 knockdowns of the round were basically Lesenvich battering Mills to the canvas after teeing off lefts and rights before Mills went down, real hard clean accurate punching from Lesnevich who was an excellent finisher
Incredibly Mills made it out of the round and settled into the contest and by the 6th it was him who was battering Lesnevich to the body with both hands but in the 10th Mills was to be down another 3 times after Lesnevich teed off on him, the second KD should've been enough for the ref to stop it as Mills was totally gone, never knew where he was the ref just allowed Lesnevich a free shot, he caught Mills with a massive right hand which put Mills out cold
Mills outpointed Lesnevich in a return to claim the title but can only find about 6 mins of the fight and there's nothing to write home about, it looked competitive but it didn't even show the 2 knockdowns Mills scored en route

Salvador Sanchez vs Azumah Nelson.
The great Sanchez's last fight before dying tragically at age 23. Great fight; great ending with Sanchez closing the show in Sanchez fashion. Nelson went on to an outstanding career capturing the WBC Featherweight and Super FW Titles and late in his career he had a failed attempt at the WBA Lightweight title against Jesse James Leija. Nelson also fought tough in a losing effort against the great Pernell Whitaker.

Joey Maxim vs Freddie Mills
Maxim KOs Mills in the 10th to win the World Light Heavyweight title, can only find highlights and it doesn't even show the finishing blow, Mills started off aggressive and dipped the legs of Maxim with a big swinging left in the 1st and rocked him with a big right in the 3rd as well, after that it seemed Maxim grew into the contest and got Mills under control backing him up on the ropes with the jab and unloading both hands
In the 10th the film showed both men slugging it out then next thing is you see Mills on the canvas in distress and unable to get up and beat the count

Lennox Lewis vs. Ray Mercer
This was a challenge in patience, guts and friction, many rounds were close; however i think Lennox was more effective in his gameplan and he edged it out. I have it 96-93 for LL.

Re: Classic fights I've watched recently
Yeah, Mercer had quite an amount of ineffective aggression there, cheered by the fans. Of course, it was close fight and Mercer had pretty much of a success, but Lennox was better overall indeed, fought smart and was better in quality.

Dick Tiger vs Joey Giardello 3+4
Giardello outboxes Tiger over 15 rounds to become World Middleweight champion, Giardello had a loss then a win over Tiger in non title bouts(not available) but this this time beat Tiger to win the title, quite a masterful display of boxing from Giardello, he was always that one step ahead of the come forward Tiger who although looked the stronger man spent a lot of time chasing shadows and hitting fresh air, Giardello put in a great show of counter punching and sticking and moving, his jab was excellent and he would throw quick bursts before getting out of the way and starting again and he made Tiger look crude
Tiger fared slightly better in the second half and had more success as Giardello tired and slowed a little, Tiger always looked dangerous with the lunging left hook, Giardello closed the show in style though and the last couple of rounds were a schooling of Tiger and there was no doubt Giardello deserved the win
Tiger wins the 4th fight via UD to regain the title, another good fight, more competitive than the previous bout, Giardello had been out about a year so maybe ringrust played a part but he wasn't as sharp as last time and the punches that Tiger missed in their 3rd fight were landing here, Giardello did have his moments of class but all in all Tiger was the boss and aggressor, the lead left hooks were landing as were the lead right hands, a few times Tiger would stun Giardello with a hook then follow up with a combination to unsettle Giardello, good performance from Tiger and he deserved to regain his old title
