I would of thought it would of done at least 500k.
I know Pacquiao is way past it but he is still a huge name even to casuals.

Yes, the old Mayweather trick.Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑23 Jan 2019, 15:11 I'm not surprised it's done well, people love PAC and hate AB
Broner has taken over Floyd's mantle as the fighter everyone would like to see get dismantled. He's going to play that out for every last $ for sure, and is too slick to come unstuck inside the ring at least.

Yep. Out of those 400k, 300k probably think that Manny got robbed against Floyd.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑23 Jan 2019, 15:38Really? I'm not, Manny still has his fans. Hell, I ended up buying it because a friend had interest in broner. I watched the UFC on my computer and went to bed after the 8th.

Manny is far more popular than Broner even in America.
The same way Hatton, Marquez and McGregor were way more popular than Mayweather in Floyd's own back yard.
With that un-fanfriendly style, what else would you expect?

It’s true. I’m one of the chumps who paid 75 bucks for this PPV and that was at least one of my reasons for paying for it. (Although I wasn’t really expecting anything other than a Manny UD.)Thomastearns wrote: ↑23 Jan 2019, 15:32 Broner has taken over Floyd's mantle as the fighter everyone would like to see get dismantled. Re: pac vs broner over 400k us ppv buys
I don't feel that 400,000 was all that good.
I figured over 500,000.
Against B list fighter like Clottey, Pac once drew more than 700,000.
Many of his routine bouts drew closer to 1 million. Arum was once frustrated that Pac's rematch with Bradley only attracted around 800,00.
Considering that Broner is a name who always pulls in big numbers on SHOWTIME, that 400,000 has to be considered disappointing.
It's being spun to suggest that Manny is as popular as ever. That is hardly true.

I agree with what you say. But we also need to consider how many people illegally stream these ppv's now.SenorPipino wrote: ↑24 Jan 2019, 10:52 I don't feel that 400,000 was all that good.

So I can see every ppv fight being less than it was 5 years ago.
But yes Manny is not close to the star he once was

Streams were rampant and more reliable 5 years ago. 10 years ago they were so good I didn't even have HBO or Showtime and got every boxing and ufc ppv free.tiny_acres wrote: ↑24 Jan 2019, 11:31I agree with what you say. Query rating's guru RKO on this. Outside of when Wilder fought on SHOWTIME, Broner does some of the best numbers when he appears on that network.
It doesn't matter what you think of him. The guy can draw a crowd.

Actually the Broner fight is a step upward for Pacquiao.
His bouts with Algieri and Rios drew even fewer eyeballs. In the 300,000s. Wilder-Fury type numbers.

Manny Pacquiao is clearly THE most popular foreign athlete in American history.Thomastearns wrote: ↑23 Jan 2019, 15:44 Manny is far more popular than Broner even in America.

When one of my buddies suggested Jamaican track star Usain Bolt might be as popular as Manny I pointed out that may be true globally (or in the British Commonwealth nations) but not in America, because track is far less popular in the US than boxing & Americans totally ignore it, except for once every 4 years at the Olympics.
Even globally Bolt's popularity has faded since he retired in 2017 and Asia has a lot more people than Europe or the Commonwealth nations.

I don't know that Manny is more popular than Duran. Boxing was soooo much bigger then. He had the garden singing happy birthday to him while he beat the shit out of a kid from the Bronx.Best Coast wrote: ↑25 Jan 2019, 00:42Manny Pacquiao is clearly THE most popular foreign athlete in American history.Thomastearns wrote: ↑23 Jan 2019, 15:44 Manny is far more popular than Broner even in America.

Re: pac vs broner over 400k us ppv buys
Manny has always had MANY casual boxing fans in his corner (I know non-boxing fans who like him just because he is so likeable). Duran was popular with hardcore boxing fans but was too much of a poor sport to match Pac's idolizing masses. Even before the "no mas" debacle Duran was known as a "sore winner" because he often refused the congratulatory post-fight handshakes of his conquered opponents. I've even seen several Duran wins on TV where he actually spit on his conquered foes after the bout!!Onetimeonly wrote: ↑25 Jan 2019, 16:09I don't know that Manny is more popular than Duran. The fight you mention with the "kid from the Bronx" was defending WBA light middleweight champ Davey Moore and the crowd that sang Duran's postfight "happy birthday" song was waving lots of Panamanian flags that night.

In Duran's day casual fan wasn t even a term. Boxing was a massive sport. Many, many more millions of Americans watched Duran fight than Manny. Not even in the same vicinity.
