Gervonta Davis vs. Hugo Ruiz - February 9, 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Davis will now defend against former world champion Hugo Ruiz in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, with coverage beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California and presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Ruiz is an all-action brawler who previously picked up a world title at super bantamweight in 2015 and most recently defeated Alberto Guevara in January on the Pacquiao vs. Broner PPV event in a featherweight fight. Ruiz, who owns 18 first round knockouts, floored Guevara in the opening minute and cruised to a near-shutout decision victory.

"I trained for three months to fight a southpaw when I fought in January," said Ruiz. "When the opponent changed, it was hard to adjust in 24 hours. After the fight I immediately went back to the gym, because you never know what's going to happen in boxing. I'm 100 percent ready to knockout Gervonta Davis."

After brilliant year 2017, this is very very bad. Cuellar from lower weightclass in 2018 and Mares from lower weightclass in 2019, both coming from losses. Mares fight was bad, and Hugo Ruiz is simply bulls!t. Still, you cannot get nobody better than Ruiz 10 days before fight night. Davis should KO oponent in 1st round, leave ring and slap promoter for this bulls!t

Irony is if he really wanted to fight a lower weight guy moving up they could've chose Gary Russell Jr

Wasn't very excited about the smallish, somewhat faded Mares moving up to 130 to get pummeled by Davis.

Even less excited by the even smaller Ruiz quickly being rounded up as the designated victim.

They're probably trying to hide something. They did the same thing to Adrien Broner and once he started fighting guys his size, he struggled.

Great point!! What sends up the red flag about Ruiz filling in is that he just finished fighting a 10-rounder on 1/19. That's only 3 WEEKS between fights. I notice 3 of Hugo's 4 losses are by KO.

Looks like a great chance for Gervonta to bolster his KO numbers...

I've been saying this could be a great fight for boxing and the DMV (DC, Maryland and Virginia). I don't know why Gary's father keeps him on the shelf. He's lucky to fight once a year. He's had hand problems so maybe that is the issue. They could do it at the new MGM outside of DC where Lomo has fought.

They had a week. Better than I'd hope for. I was looking forward to the mares fight.

I think neither would really want the fight. Are Baltimore and DC Rivals? Because these two guys never act like they are in competition with one another based on how close their cities are.

In many ways Baltimore and DC are rivals. In boxing for years DC had great amateurs and pros whereas Baltimore did not. DC has dropped off a bit at the highest levels. The gym Tank trains in "Upton" is starting to produce some good boxers both am and pro. I don't know why these two don't want to mix it up. I am beginning to think Russels career is not going to advance much. His brothers Antuanne and Antonio are more active right now.

Davis weighed 130.4..

Lost his shorts and then came in at 130.2

He has 2 hours to lose the 0.2 pounds. This guy can never make weight.

Mates and his team said he would have pulled out if Davis came on overweight.

Both Mayweather and Ellerbe are trying to promote the fight that Tank will find it hard to win.

First Ellerbe said last minute replacements worry him after seeing Korobov vs. Jermall

And now Floyd has said Ruiz is a tougher fight for Tank than Mares.

Gervonta will probably look pretty spectacular in this fight, but it's a Jr. Featherweight opponent he's faced with so he should.

It'll be very surprising if Davis doesnt KO a natural super bantam like Ruiz!! 3 of Hugo's 4 losses have already been by KO!!
