Bennie Briscoe vs Mustafa Hamsho

Post by scorpio83 »

Who would win in their prime match up at middleweight between "Baad" Bennie Briscoe and Mustafa Hamsho? Would Briscoe swarm Hamsho all over the ring and stop him in the 12th round or Hamsho would pull the "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler to outbox "Baad" Bennie behind his southpaw style to take a decision in 15 rounds?

I am with the goose on this one but the stoppage would come via cuts not a KO. I can't see Briscoe swarming anyone, I think of his as a boxer-puncher not a swarm(er). If there is swarming to be done I suspect it would be Hamsho revisiting his victory over Benitez. But Briscoe was bigger and stronger and it is unlikely Hamsho would be able to bully him the way he did Benitez.

Briscoe by TKO in six to eight rounds.

With that said, I think Hamsho was better than we remember; if there had been no Hagler, IMO Hamsho would have held the MW title for at least a short period of time.

Agree except I think Hamsho was a lot tougher than lasting only 6-8 rounds against Bad Bennie. I see it more of a back and forth with Bennie wearing down Hamsho and taking him out 10-12. Maybe earlier by cuts.

Of course and Briscoe would make Hamsho look "Baad" by pulling the first Hagler fight by cutting and battering Hamsho with his jabs and powerful punches.

Briscoe lost to Antuofermo while Bennie still had something left, so it's not out of this world that he would struggle a bit with Hamsho. I'd pick prime Briscoe to win, but it wouldn't be easy for him.

Agreed, no way either is getting stopped.

I was a big Hamsho fan I loved his personal story; and even after boxing he has proved himself a good man who deserves respect from all, but a good boxer who he couldn't bully is likely to cut him. When I say stoppage, I see it on cuts. Even a good banger like Briscoe isn't likely to knock him out a prime Hamsho, but Hamsho could on occasion bleed. I would hate to bet on him against Briscoe.

Some great fights: Benitez, Parker (2), Scypion, Czyz, Minter.

You don't see Bobby Czyz mentioned much in this forum.

I respect Hamsho too as he and "Baad" Bennie were the uncrowned middleweight champions because they unfortunately fought the two great middleweight champions in their prime. Briscoe fought a prime Carlos Monzon a Hall of Famer and a prime Rodrigo Valdez a future Hall of Famer. Hamsho challenged the prime "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler twice for his World Middleweight Title. One common big name opponent they each fought was "Marvelous" Marvin Hagler, who beat a past prime "Baad" Bennie by outboxing him early in his career, but stopped Hamsho twice in his defense of his World Middleweight Title. If Monzon, Hagler and Valdez weren't in their way, Briscoe and Hamsho would each have been World Middleweight Champion or hold one of the major middleweight titles.
