Lubbers has been in the news quite a bit here after a documentary on him aired last week. It's in Dutch, but for those interested here it is:

A crowdfunding campaign was started following the documentary and he's likely to return to the Netherlands soon.

Lubbers probably didn't win a round in losing to Ali, who was tuning up for his rematch with Frazier.

But he was gutsy with few expecting him to survive the distance against Ali.

Ali pretty much dominated the fight strictly using a left jab. He threw only a few right hands, later explaining "I'm saving my right hand for Frazier."

Of course Ali had plenty of hand issues throughout his career, and pain probably was the reason he used his right sparingly against an outgunned opponent.

Lubbers is wrong about being the only white opponent who lasted the distance against Ali.

Offhand I can think of Tunney Hunsacker (Ali's debut) George Chuvalo (twice) and Joe Bugner (twice) as white opponents who Ali failed to stop.

You have named them all. Of these five contests, four of them occurred before Lubbers met Ali in 1973.
I am going to do a short piece on Lubbers and his three bouts against British opponents in the Yesterday's Heroes section of Boxing News a week tomorrow if anyone is interested.

While it's a sad story I have to say that article in the OP was very poorly written. It's quite obvious English isn't the first language of whoever wrote that, but still...yeesh.

Thanks for the heads up about the Lubbers' retrospective.

Ali's opponents, even the obscure ones like Lubbers, are a part of history too.

Always good to read more info on their careers.

It's probable that the article was originally written in a language other than English.

Maybe than it was translated using n internet device like Google Translate.

From first hand experience, I know how poor those web translation services can be.
