Joe Calzaghe v Andre Ward (Prime Fight)

Post by OH_RickNMorty »

If both fighters, in their primes, fought each other who do you think wins the fight?

Both fighters have a three-month training camp. They are both at their best peak condition they could possibly be at — note that both fighters complete the training camp with no injuries.

Now finally, the statistics between the two:

CALZAGHE:
5’ 11”
165—168 LBS
73”

WARD:
6’ 0”
165—168 LBS
71”

**Who wins?!** — Someone’s 0 has to go! Please leave your comments below. 👍🏻🥊

Hmm, tough one. I go with Ward as he has the better resume. Not with great conviction though.

Think Calzaghe would just volume him. Ward is very overrated.

Probably Ward. Too tricky and elusive. He could have been outworked overall, but scored more effective stuff to win that fight.

This is a real hard one to call. I can easily see a narrow win either way or a draw. I guess that's what you should be expect from the #1 and #1A guy of a weight class.

Agreed, but if you get 50,000 dollars just for making a prediction and 100,000 if you get it right, who do you back?

Calzaghe. For Ward to stand a realistic chance of winning IMO he'd need it to be in California or Las Vegas. The further east he goes the less tolerable the officials will be to his tactics and rewarding to his style. Calzaghe being faster, more skilled, equally adept as far as ring IQ and adaptability goes in addition to his crazy volume has a big edge IMO. I think it would be a lot of spoiling by Ward but not enough boxing and he'd lose an ugly decision around 116-112.

They're actually both quite alike in terms of being able to impose a game-plan on a very dangerous, top-level opponent that just nullifies the threat and then lets them win rounds and build momentum.

I could potentially see Joe losing this one because Ward was equally smart and adaptable and when it was needed he could also be very physical and rough.

They've both got the excellent Kessler in common and dismantled this quality fighter equally well...…..which makes their own match-up very interesting indeed.

Advantage Ward,,,,,,,but by a tiny margin.

Calzaghe all the way... besides, Ward was a little too dirty for my taste: a Calzaghe without brittle bones would have dismantled him, but due to his brittle bones, Calzaghe would have got to outbox him, like he did vs Hopkins, and Ward is no Hopkins by far: hell, he fought even dirtier than him.

You can see that Ward trained and fought responsibly, but Calzaghe is the better fighter by every mean: quicker, more skilled, more powerful, more talented, and more loyal, of course.
Moreover, all Ward fights are pretty ugly to watch, he's great but he was a lot of hype too.

Presumably this is the Victor Conte GNC Andre Ward?

Doesn't matter what he's on ward wouldn't even contemplate going for a ko in Rd 1. He'd be gauging Joe's speed. Close fight, calzaghe is an underrated body puncher. Be interesting to see ward deal with a faster guy that gives back the rough stuff

very tough to call, should have a draw option.

It would almost certainly go the distance and be subjective on the scorecards. Probably Ward in the US and Calzaghe in the UK - home advantage would be big in such a close fight.

If I had to pick one....

Calzaghe, just.

Ward SD. It's interesting, for all the talk of Calzaghe's volume/activity, the Hopkins fight was razor close despite Hopkins' low output. So I think it could actually be Ward's activity, relative to B-Hop's, that could win him the fight.
