fighters who got in much better shape

Post by jamamb »

any weight but i guess mainly applies to the heavier ones

we here about how so and so needs to shed another couple stone or another few rolls of fat

which fighters who were known for poor shape or being lardy actually turned it around? and i mean guys who were out of shape for fights and not merely in between like hatton

Duran was out of shape for many of his non-title fights. He would use those fights to get himself in shape for his world title showdowns, which is why he often looked poor in 10-rounders. He was floored and outboxed by Esteban DeJesus in a 10-rounder in 1972, for his first defeat, and was booed out of the ring after a 10-rounder with Javier Muniz in he States in 1977. He also laboured against Speedy Gonzalez (with Leonard looking on), Saoul Mamby, Edwin Viruet, Jeff Llanas and Nino Gonzalez, while losing to Kirkland Laing of course. That about covers his best years as a fighter.

I agree.

However, he lost 10 stone which was about 35% of his body weight.

Ricky Hatton did this many times and not just once.

Hatton good shout of course.

If anyone could post a weigh in shot of JMM vs Mayweather and PacMan 3..,
that difference would be a candidate !

I remember watching Tom Little fight Tom Dallas in Prizefighter, he was a real chub. He got himself fit a few years later but of course still isn't body beautiful.

Witherspoon. His condition often belied his skill but highlighted his indifference and attitude.

Mathis, snr and jnr. Not sure either really ever got in shape but both were much better than their waistlines suggested.

Slightly different because it might have been before they took up boxing, but David Benavidez and Lawrence Okolie used to be fat.

Danny Williams before he fought Scott Gammer, seem to remember him shedding a lot of weight, and pulled off a good win

I remember Danny being convinced there was something wrong with the scales for his fight vs Gammer. While he used to joke about his dedication. He did have one of the best "fitness" trainers in his corner in Jim McDonnell, but he was never the same really since the Sam fight and seem to have this geniune belief that as a fatty he could absorb punches better.

Looking back at Danny's career, he had so much talent - but Mentally he was never right following the Sam fight and Physically, I honestly think Tyson did some damage. It was the first time he really seem to do this funny balance dance thing (1st round) and then in his next fight - he was up and down like a Yo Yo vs Klitchsko.
