Fair Play Club was the sight of event # 225990 25NOV1893

Post by josesantiago98 »

The December 16th, 1893 issue of The National Police Gazette (NPG) reports various bouts for an event held at the Fair Play Club on Nov 25th, 1893 (event ID#225990), including one that is not currently part of the Boxrec database but should probably be added.

In the opening bout in which both men weighed in close to the 135 limit Joe Butler (ID #011624) won a decision from Joe Stafford (ID #128671). This bout's result is currently listed correctly in the Boxrec database. However, the weight class is not specified. Given the NPG report, it should be listed as having been contested in the Lightweight Division.

In the main event (which does not appear to be in the Boxrec database) NPG reports a bout between Jack Downey (ID #010568) and Mike Touhey (no evidence in database) in which downey won a six round decision.

A snapshot of the clipping from NPG can be found at the link below.

Hope this helps. Love the site. Keep up the great work.

You make a good point. Add to it that, the Butler v Stafford bout was a preliminary to Downey v Touhey bout, I start to think that maybe there are two different Joe Butlers from the era whose records are jumbled into one in the database. Someone who had fought and beat C. C. Smith and Alec Greggains and Joe Goddard would have likely been in the main event, not in a prelim.
