I thought Ward was a revelation on Friday night, miles better than the last time I saw him. Reminded me a bit of Howard Winstone in the way he landed hard jabs and always seemed to have time to slip his opponent's punches.
I completely agree with this. We have an outstanding boxer on our hands, admittedly one whose power is not yet fully developed, and it is a pleasure to be able to watch the sort of performance Tommy put up last Friday night. I started this thread because I felt the lad wasn't getting any proper recognition and because no-one seemed to want to discuss him. It is good to see so many opinions now being expressed. Ken Buchanan won a world title without having real 'power' but with outstanding boxing ability, lets hope that Tommy can now do the same.
Power is important, of course, it really helps, but so do slick boxing skills.
In my opinion, to be world class, you need to be outstanding in two of three departments. If you have all three then you will obviously stand out, but two of the three are enough. These are :
1. Power
2. Exceptional boxing skills
3. An excellent chin.
I would rather have 2 and 3 with only limited power than 1 and 2 with a poor chin.
I think that 2 and 3 are at least as good as 1 and 3.
If you have power and a good chin but your boxing skills (especially in defence) are your weakest point then you will get found out.
If you have excellent boxing skills and a good chin but do not possess real power then you can survive quite handily.
I know others may disagree, and if you do so then please, lets have a grown up conversation about it. I do not want to be abused by keyboard warriors just because they don't agree with me.
The big question about Tommy is - Can he take a punch? I have seen a lot of his contests and I think he can.
