biggest punchers today?/how do u determine a puncher?

Post by jamamb »

i notice some saying ajs an overrated puncher because hes stopped some guys on there feet and has a distance fight

however , even a guy like wilder has battered an opponent with loads of shots for many rounds yet failed to drop them, and also been taken 12.

for you, who are the p4p biggest punchers around and to you what shows a genuine huge hitter rather then someone with overhyped power?

For me a big puncher is someone who can put people again and again, out before they hit the deck, like Julian Jackson, I'd say Wilder is the closest to that at the moment

ya wilders a huge hitter. although for even him too a lot of the guys get up repeatedly or need to really be battered to be finished, or are stopped standing. i think very very few punchers, even among the best, consistently totally sent the guy down and out quickly when they landed

It's definitely not always as straight forward as it seems. Compare Canelo and Golovkin, for example.

More guys have gone 12 with Canelo without looking massively hurt, e.g. Lara, Cotto, Chavez. Whereas even when Golovkin doesn't completely run over someone, e.g. Murray/Jacobs, he still hurts them along the way. Add to that that GGG has a much higher KO%, even in title fights, and everything points towards him being the bigger puncher. And I'd agree that he is, yet Canelo seems to score more of those 'highlight reel, 1 punch KOs' than Golovkin. At least in recent years.

Thurman is an interesting one. I think he can probably hit a heavy bag just as hard as Spence, who most people would have down as the biggest puncher at 147. Problem is they're not fighting heavy bags. And Spence knows how to set up his shots better than Keith. If Thurman can't stop guys with those big, wide shots then he doesn't seem to know how to break them down or open them up. So he does the same thing over and over with little effect until he realises he can't stop them, at which point he's happy to coast to a decision.

Powers a strange one, some people are obsessed by slating boxers punch power, the Joshua mention by Jam being case in point, Eubank Jr is another one who people cant help but slate his power, while I agree he's not a massive puncher, with the ferocity he puts in his shots, if he traps you or stuns you, he will always have a great chance of getting the guy out of there, whether the ref steps in or the fella lying unconscious on the canvas is irrelevant

A stoppage is a stoppage regardless

Just watching so many tens of thousands of fights through the years I feel I get a good reading on it. That's one of the things I'm wrong about the least in the sport. I think the monster is my pick for top puncher now. Lopez is coming.

ya, i just mention him because hes so obviously a massive hitter, yet even he has standing/between round cumulative stoppages, distance fights, guys getting up multiple times etc....whereas a lot of times ppl treat those things like the guy must not be a genuine big time puncher.

but its pretty much non existent someone who pretty much instantly flattened everyone they hit

Inoue and Srisaket deserve a mention on a pound for pound basis

As for determining power, there's different types of power I guess. There's lights out power (Jackson, Hearn etc) and then scary power (where they scare a fighter with their power, it's less explosive but very damaging (Golovkin, V Klit)

Wilder is probably the hardest one punch hitter. That’s just about all he has though a big right hand. Hamed was a prime example could take you out with any punch he threw.

Beterbiev and Yarde have p4p power, the Yarde pick might seem baffling as he's beaten no one to prove it but some guys you just know, like Beterbiev he doesn't load up and has a heavy handed calmness, both they fellas catch you then you'll feel it

I think AJ has tremendous power and concussive power.
I do not see him as single punch knockout type of guy. His ko' s appear to come from cumulative punishment.

The only time I saw that a premature stoppage in one of his fights was Takam.
And I have history on here of defending early stoppages to save a fighter from too much damage. I would not of stopped the fight at the time it was.
Just a matter of opinion

I've always thought of it as a difference between a 'puncher' and a 'finisher'. Thats not to say that there arent examples that run contrary to all this, or that blur the lines, of course.

I think to be successful at any level people have to respect your power, if people feel that there is no possibility of you hurting them, we've all seen fights like that, where people can't keep the other guy from doing what he wants, because there's no price to pay.,

Power above and beyond that level - I usually say a puncher is someone who can take you out with one hit. That highlight reel, Marquez vs Pacman type shot. A finisher is someone who might not have the power for a one-shot KO but is expert at delivering the finishing flurry, which isn't as straightforward as it sounds, again, we've all seen fights where a stricken fighter is clinging on, or just about manages to bob and weave out of trouble. Finishers don't let you do that.

I think that when people talk about accumulation stoppages a lot of people seem to be thinking that it's in that one flurry, or section of the round, that the accumulation has occurred. Its more usually the result of consistency over the course of the fight that has depleted the other fighters resistance.

Kovalev on the way up was something else.
GGG too.

They all said the same about both of them - (I paraphrase the gist)
"I've been hit harder with one explosive shot, but it was the heaviness of the hands - every shot hurt"

I think AJ must be up there.
It's easy to call him a stiff body-builder - and he is a little bit- but he's very explosive with it, considering. With the combination of his speed and size I'd have him above Wilder.

I had a question, got into a debate at work (ardent boxing heads) about developing power and being born a puncher - what do you think can you become a puncher through training ?

I don't believe in modern boxing there have been many one punch, natural knockout punchers. I mean someone who may be getting beat but at any time can knock you out with one punch.
In my lifetime the best of this kind was Julian Jackson. Hamed was close.
Currently Wilder comes near, if Fury hadn't gotten up, I'd have to concede he's there.
I have to think the modern gloves might have something to do with it, or perhaps the lack of hard manual labour might be a possibility.
I personally think the Julian Jacksons and Ingemar Johanssons of this world were born to punch like mules. Both these men just seemed to land without really trying, and at times seemed very awkward.

You can teach someone to punch more correctly, or tactically wise to sit down on their shots more but I don't think you can really teach punch power.

Jackson's ability to knock somebody out cold was unnerving, his punches often looked effortless yet could render a man needing medical assistance.
