Your wrong predictions ?

Post by ValMar »

This is the short list of my wrong predictions :

1. V. Klitschko vs. Solis, I expected a competitive fight.
2. W. Klitschko vs. Fury, I expected Klitschko's victory by destruction.
3. Haye vs Bellew 1, I expected Haye's victory by murder.

As a child I had expected Foreman would have KO'd Ali.

What about you and yours wrong predictions ?

Same for Haye vs Bellew, I thought Tony just took the fight to cash in.
I thought Leonard was mad for challenging Hagler.
I thought Meldrick had the edge over JCC (I wasn't far off the mark there)

My absolute worst predictions are:

3. Thinking Glowacki was going to surprise and KO a relatively pro-green Usyk.

2. I had questions about Kovalev's durability and determination - arguably later shown to be justified, but it was naive to think Cleverly and then Hopkins were going to be the ones take advantage.

1. Somehow I thought Marquez was going to beat Mayweather. I really don't know how I convinced myself of this; wishful thinking I guess!

Those are the bad ones that I remember. My prediction skills are normally pretty good otherwise; don't think it's a bad thing to get it wrong sometimes though - the sport wouldn't be worth watching if it was entirely predictable.

Some that come to mind:
I thought Holyfield would be stopped within 4 rounds vs Tyson. Thought he was too much of a warrior for his own best against Tyson.

Floyd vs Canelo: Saw Floyd training five days before the fight and he looked so small...I was also impressed by Canelos confidence and thought he would overpower and outwork Floyd.

Fury vs Klitschko: Thought Fury would get clipped within six rounds. That Klitschko eventually would get him sooner or later (like Wilder almost did).

De La Hoya vs Pacman: First time I heard about the bout I thought the whole idea was ridiculous. De La Hoya had barely lost to Floyd at Super welter the year before and Pacman just went up from Junior Light, had one bout at lightweight and now would fight De La Hoya - it seemed to much of a difference. Didn´t think about the speed difference though...

Didn´t learn my lesson and I picked Pacman to lose to Hatton, Cotto and Margarito. After that I have favored Pacman in all his fights except vs Floyd.

I picked Klitschko over Joshua. Since the 6th I was thinking "Ha, told ya, motherf*ckers", but... We remember, what had eventually happened...

I’ve been wrong plenty of times, but the most memorable are probably the first Wilder-Stiverne fight and the Froch-Groves rematch (I was convinced both fights were going to end in shock 1st round ko by the guys who ultimately lost  ).

ODLH vs pacman - thinking it will be an easy night for Oscar
Corrales vs Clottey - Clottey was unknown that time
Acosta vs Antillon - was going with Urbano since he's still unbeaten
Broner vs Maidana - Broner was touted as the next Mayweather that time.
Tszyu vs Hatton - I thought it's just another KO win for Tszyu
Marquez vs Mayweather - I just believe with JMM coming out of a KO win vs Casamayor and Floyd was on a long lay off is a good formula for the blue print. :witzend:

Too many wrong picks too. Taylor - Froch, Ward not winning the WBSS were some of them too.

When I was young I was in the Mike Tyson train and he looks invincible going to the Holyfield fight. But he's not the real deal for nothing.

Boxing is often referred to as being “the theater of the unexpected”, which means that most of us have failed to predict the outcome of several fights. The most recent one for me being Jermell Charlo’s loss against Tony Harrison. I’m sure that there’ll be even more upsets during 2019.

We all got Charlo/Harrison wrong, if we're being honest. This is why they fight.
