Julian Jackson is the classic example for me of one punch ko power whereas Mike Tyson for example more often than not stopped opponents with a culmination of punches- in fact When you look at fighters records who have high ko percentages, there are not many who do it with the one punch, usually a barrage of punches

As mentioned Julian Jackson could do it almost effortlessly to an opponent. Khaosai Galaxy seemed to be able to do the same.

I think it can be coached to a certain degree. One thing I have noticed over the years - when you think of all the British, European and World level Welsh fighters over the years - a surprising large percentage of them don't seem to carry power.... Maccarinelli was devastating, and Colin Jones' name is still sung in Rugby terraces (stuff of legend), Calzaghe's is possibly open to more debate - hand injuries also coincided with a step up in opposition..... and obviously there was Wilde many moons ago. But really, for the amount of other geniune British, European and World level fighters us Welsh have had - it is something that is quite low....... similarly when German boxing was shown more frequently on UK TV - we could predict it was going to be a W12 in the main event and we were right - usually 9.5 times out of 10!

I definitely think it can be down to the coaching to a degree. I'm not saying had Steve Robinson been trained by Freddie Roach from the word go, he'd be like Tyson - but he is one I always thought SHOULD have had more power. He had lovely hand speed and was strong as an ox. If power is speed x strength he should have had more.

But I think as fighters defences are improving, devasting KO's are going down. I think the criticism of Pac losing his "power and killer instinct" are unjust, he's just no longer facing fighters who were weight drained to bejusus or leading with their face. For all the criticisms of Adrien Broner - that man has a hell of a chin.

Timing comes into it as well as speed and power. Some fighters might not have the power but possess brilliant timing - I rember the Nunn Kalambay fight being an example of this

Jackson obviously stands out, but I feel Hearns surely deserves more of a shout-out. At Welter through to Middle he was a stone-cold killer - witness the Cuevas, Duran and Schuler KOs as evidence.

To be fair Benn looked like he'd done a deal with the Devil that night, traded his soul for the win no matter how much punishment got thrown his way, he was never quite right after that bout.

I agree with the Hearns comments. I wouldn't like to have given him or Jackson half a chance to hit me on the chin !!!!

Just to add- I still believe lethal one-punchers are born and just happen to end up in a boxing gym.
And just to remind you, I also mentioned earlier on about Ingemar Johansson.
Ingemar literally couldn't box. He pawed with his left while going backwards simply as a defensive tactic, and suddenly from nowhere he knocked you senseless with the most awkward right cross you could ever imagine. That's what I mean about being born as a puncher and stumbling into boxing . Please have a look on youtube. Anyone who could knock Eddie Machen out with one punch, have Patterson wondering about the ring looking for John Wayne( I'm not joking), and flattening a young and fresh Henry Cooper was a PUNCHER.

Tommy Hearns couldn't break an egg as an amateur but he turned pro at 19 and suddenly began knocking people over. Jimmy Flint is another man who developed real power after turning pro. In fact, he won his first seven fights on points but then had a nose operation to help his breathing and returned as a banger. Bizarre! One of the best bangers of the 1980s is a fellow called Israel Contreras, who flattened the usually sturdy Wilfredo Vazquez inside a round and nearly knocked out Khaosai Galaxy in a shot at the WBA super-flyweight title before running out of steam. He had better luck against Luisito Espinoza for the WBA bantamweight title.
