Would Marvin Hagler be a top Middleweight today?

Post by goose 5 »

Could a prime Hagler beat today's top middleweights even though they rehydrate 15 or even 20 pounds while Hagler entered the ring in the low 160's? Imo, he would fight at 147 under today's weigh in rules.

I don't see Hagler having problems competing in today's MW division.

Considering Hagler always came in light for his title fights. I think he could of ruled 147-154&160 without much problem.
He was just that damn good

I think Marvin would of had great fights with both canelo and golovkin as all three take such a good shot I agree he'd outwork canelo but GGG of 4 years ago would be no walk over I'd stick pick hagler but the jab would be a major factor in the fight

Marvin one of the greatest fighters ever. He would be the champ in this one. He had a couple of tough fights with ggg and canelo but he'd come out ahead.

He'd lose a very iffy decision to Canelo today

Doubtful canelo would see 12 at Marvin's pace. Definitely nothing Alvarez has dealt with before.

Canelo would have the judges but he'd likely get shut out so though it would be "close" he'd not even get the decision on Golden Boy's cards. He wouldn't try to force the fight with Hagler, he'd get picked off and then he'd get tired and look for counters.

Hagler would school GGG too but it would be closer. The rest of the division would be cannon fodder as much as I like Jacobs and Andrade they'd get stopped. Charlo would be beaten like a drum.

I think there's probably more talent in today's division than in Hagler's era. People are often accusing various fighters of benefiting from weak eras but Hagler for some reason gets a pass in this regard.

Also, I'm skeptical Hagler's punches will affect guys who enter the ring in the 170s and 180s. If so, why did he never move up to light heavyweight in his own era?

I think so yes, good power, great chin, great skills, could switch stance.

Great point about Hagler not trying lightheavyweight in his day. Michael Spinks offered to make 165 and fight Hagler but Hagler wanted the weigh in at fight time and Spinks said no way.

Now, nobody at middleweight today can punch like Spinks, even though they are essentially lightheavyweights at fight time. Still, I think Hagler would have a very difficult time against today's top middleweights based on power and size, not skill and ability.

We need to stop with the nonsense that he would be outweighed by 20 pounds or something. He wouldn't be.
He had also great chin, he would not be overpowered by anyone today. He would be the middleweight champion today.

He was a rock solid middleweight. Weighing in the day before would only have his pace, that nobody today keeps, increase.

Easy question to answer.

Yes

He'd be a Top Middleweight in any era. He'd be The Champion in most eras.

Guys with very good power, outstanding accuracy, great killer instinct, amazing conditioning, a ridiculous chin, and nearly unheard of skills and versatility are top fighters......in any era.

I don't know how much exactly he would be outweighed but there are cases of recent middleweights rehydrating above the light heavyweight limit. Kelly Pavlik was known to enter the ring as high as 178 pounds. I doubt Hagler was entering the ring anywhere near that.
