Sean ‘Big Sexy’ Turner and Con Sheehan are in talks to try and make a forgotten heavyweight fight.
The two most decorated big men of their vest-wearing era were continuously linked two years ago when the regular amateur foes were both active pros and stablemates under MTK Global.
However, after racing his way to 6-0, Tipperary’s Sheehan hasn’t fought since June of 2017 and is now a free agent, while ‘Big Sexy’ endured a difficult 2018.
What looked certain to be the first heavyweight Irish title fight since Tyson Fury beat Martin Rogan to claim the green strap back in 2012 has fallen by the wayside – with talk ceasing bar one notable social media spat last year.
Not on the minds of most boxing fans, but how fun would this be? While Turner was dispatched in 3 by UK prospect Nathan Gorman and lost an 8 round decision to Hrgovic in his last two fights, the undefeated Sheehan (27 y/o) has beaten ancient journeyman Tom Mrazek and had a decision win over the always tough Sokolowski. (Go Kam!). The size differential is around 6" with Sheehan having the advantage, but an all Irish HW championship should bring some excitement despite no KD's or stoppages.

Neither of them are going further than Irish domestic level, but a decent enough fight at the level and it's always good to keep these titles busy to keep local interest going.

That's the point. We don't always need the best guys to fight to be entertained or interested!

Id like to see all the regional titles kept busy, even if it's just giving the journeymen a shot.
Most journeymen fighting the prospects every week are area title level.
It would give them something to go for, they would be competitive fights and generate local interest.
Most fighters would be happy to fight for a title even if they were getting a bit less than 4 round to money against a prospect.
In the 90's the midlands always kept their titles busy and it worked well.

That's a formula for making new fans. I used to follow the local boys even though they were far from world level. They were getting coverage in the local papers and became local gods. Some were world level. We had Howard Davis Jr, Bobby Cassidy, Buddy McGirt, all local.Coco wrote: ↑21 Feb 2019, 16:57Id like to see all the regional titles kept busy, even if it's just giving the journeymen a shot.

If you aren't top level the only way to earn a couple of quid is on the road as an opponent.
Nobody is going to follow a fighter losing every week.
But if they can also have some local fights they can get a bit of support, a bit more respect and generate some interest for the sport. Local title fights will do that.
It will make regular fighters more ambitious too.
The local title fights wil be like world title fights for them.
