Surprise! Charr vs Oquendo cancelled (again)

Post by oogiebe »

ESPN: The fight between secondary heavyweight world titlist Manuel Charr and mandatory challenger Fres Oquendo, already long overdue, has been canceled.

The fight was on at least its third date -- April 6 in Munich -- but was canceled when Oquendo failed to sign the contract by Friday's deadline, Patrick English, the attorney for Charr promoter Global Sports Management, told ESPN on Sunday.

Gee what a surprise! Who cares anyway?

Good matchups if they happen. Regardless of who orders it.

I'd bet it doesn't either

This is all so pathetic.

Charr should be stripped of his precious belt and Oquendo should simply be banned from the sport altogether so we don't have to go through this endless crap ad nauseum.

The good news is that it should result in Charr vs Bryan, so we skip the pathetic 40+ year-old-hasn't-been-in-the-ring-in-5 years-Oquendo.

What would make Oquendo go through early 5 years of waiting and then turning down the fight?
I thought the WBA was insane but Oquendo may possibly be just as crazy.
What a waste of time

"...the WBA says it believes it is obliged to give him a title opportunity based on the outcome of a federal lawsuit from several years ago.

However, now that Oquendo has passed on the fight, it would seem as though that obligation is over..."

Don't get too excited. We all know that whenever we're talking about the WBA heavyweight belt and Oquendo that NOTHING is ever what it seems. I wouldn't be surprised if this went back to court.

Maybe he was hoping for "step aside" money, which at his age, is probably the safest way to earn a crust.

No f*cking clue why he wouldn't have signed the contract. I can't even see him beating Charr honestly, but Charr was the best chance he was ever gonna have at picking up any sorta belt.

I'm far from a lawyer but I think Oquendo screwed himself.
He might get some money from the WBA to go away. But I think he'll be dropped from the ratings in the next 30 to 60 days

I don't know whether to laugh or cry, or rip my hair out knowing i could've made some money betting on this happening ;-)

I would agree with WBA's stance though, his behaviour is not that of one who wants to fulfil the legal obligations and i think a court would probably agree.

Charr v Bryan to unify the regular title and then AJ to beat the winner as a warm-up the same night he fights Miller?

So now Joyce/Stiverne is an "Eliminator" to face Charr. Sanctioning fees must be behind budget numbers. :witzend:

Charr v Bryan would be an interesting fight. Interesting in that it could go either way. Bring it on.

I used to feel sorry for Fres because he lost some close decisions and fighters kept failing drug tests who were scheduled to fight him.

But after he refused to fight Miller and stopped signing contracts, its time to move on. You'd think he could have stayed active these last 4 years if he wanted to.

Went through all the trouble of waging a legal battle to get a crack at the coveted regular championship, but seems disinterested in actually fighting for it.

I don't want to see Oquendo fight ever again, especially not for a title eliminator or a engage in a secondary title fight.

That being said, it's too early to judge Fres' reasons for not signing the contract for the Charr fight, since none of us know if the terms he was supposed to agree to were reasonable or not.

Who cares. The guy hasn't fought in like 5 years and is like 45 y/o.

Considering he hasn't fought in what, 4 1/2 years, you are doing very well with your wish.
