Would Marvin Hagler be a top Middleweight today?
Re: Would Marvin Hagler be a top Middleweight today?
When Hagler announced his retirement in 1988 he said he weighed 166. Hagler was rock solid but not a big middleweight by any means. I see him at welter today and rehydrating to about 162 or 163. He'd eat a prime Mayweather alive.
Re: Would Marvin Hagler be a top Middleweight today?
He was a somewhat smallish MW, and that does give me the tiniest bit of pause. But, in the end, he was such an exceptional fighter that had, literally, ALL of the tools you would want if you were putting together an elite fighter that I would be beyond stunned if he failed to be a top fighter in any era. It's true that the guys he fought today might be bigger than he typically saw, but there is no way that the fighters who are so carefully managed today have much experience with a fighter as good as Hagler was, so it goes both ways.Cojimar 1946 wrote: ↑22 Feb 2019, 15:25 I don't know how much exactly he would be outweighed but there are cases of recent middleweights rehydrating above the light heavyweight limit. Kelly Pavlik was known to enter the ring as high as 178 pounds. I doubt Hagler was entering the ring anywhere near that.
This goes back to the age old question we always have here of just how important is "size" in a given match up. It's hard to know for sure, but in this scenario, I say not nearly important enough to keep Hagler from excelling in a big way.

A 178 lb Pavlik would get eatin alive by Hagler
Re: Would Marvin Hagler be a top Middleweight today?
i think defo he would be a small mw today, but he was easily good enough to still be levels above these guys , just obviously a far better mw who had a lot more tools and gifts to work with
Re: Would Marvin Hagler be a top Middleweight today?
If today's middles had to fight Hagler's level of competition from before he'd even won the title, I doubt they'd get to fight for the titleCojimar 1946 wrote: ↑22 Feb 2019, 12:36 I think there's probably more talent in today's division than in Hagler's era. People are often accusing various fighters of benefiting from weak eras but Hagler for some reason gets a pass in this regard.

I tend to not chime in to this sort of nonsense but I guess I'll take the bait today. You just contradicted yourself and made a pretty absurd statement..."Hagler was rock solid. I see him as a welter today rehydrating to 162 or 163". WTF? He was indeed rock solid and fought at or just below 160 his entire career. Does anybody in their right mind actually think he could get down to 147??? Boggles the mind what people just blurt out.
To answer the question to the thread...it is a resounding YES. GGG and Canelo are exceptional 160lbers but can hardly be mentioned along the likes of Hagler, Monzon, SRR, and Hopkins.

tbh hop though better then ggg and canelo actually has not that great of mw resume, lots of fights but not much quality, granted the win over tito was quality, i feel like maybe i cant quite lump him in with hagler or monzon
Re: Would Marvin Hagler be a top Middleweight today?
I'm not blurting anything out. Hagler didn't dehydrate during his career; With a day before weigh-in, he could make welter. Lots of fighters today would have to fight in heavier classes if weigh-ins were on the same day.

There's a site that gives rehydration weights for various divisions and welterweights are known to rehydrate as high as the low 160s.
Some examples are as follows

Antonio Margarito vs Shane Mosley 2009
Margarito 160 Mosley 160
Andre Berto vs Luis Collazo 2009

Joshua Clottey vs Zab Judah 2008
Clottey 156 Judah 147
Andre Berto vs Miguel Rodriguez 2008
Berto 162 Rodriguez 162

I wouldn't be surprised if Hagler put on at least 5-10 lbs between weigh in and fight. He'd have a couple of small meals and fluids. I would believe he'd be closer to 165-170 by fight time. He was a notoriously terrific preparer.

He weighed in same day, he probably didn't put on more than a couple pounds.
Re: Would Marvin Hagler be a top Middleweight today?
He'd be 5-10lbs heavier at fight time with todays weigh-in and that would probably further improve his already awesome stamina.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑24 Feb 2019, 07:00 He weighed in same day, he probably didn't put on more than a couple pounds.
