Jack Sharkey vs Tony Galento
Jack Sharkey vs Tony Galento
Would who win between former world heavyweight champion "The Boston Gob" Jack Sharkey and "Two Ton" Tony Galento? Would Sharkey outbox and out-swarm him for a decision win or Galento's power left hooks along with his rough tactics stop Sharkey in the later rounds?
Re: Jack Sharkey vs Tony Galento
I think Tony would take Sharkey out. He was very powerful and an animal in the ring. Sharkey wouldn't be able to keep Galento off of him.
Re: Jack Sharkey vs Tony Galento
I like Sharkey's skill over Galento's power. Jack by wide, wide decision.
Re: Jack Sharkey vs Tony Galento
I think Sharkey would clown him. There's always the chance he'd blow it, but I think it's very small.
Re: Jack Sharkey vs Tony Galento
You're right, Sharkey would clown Galento because Sharkey had a height and reach advantages along with his lighter weight and speed to box him badly. Look what Sharkey did with the bigger Primo Carnera in their first fight.

Sharkey was way, way better. He would win easily. Wouldn't worry too much about Galento's alleged "power".

This thread is borderline offensive to Jack Sharkey. What did Galento do to be compared with someone like Sharkey?

Sharkey wasn't as great as this thread may lead you to believe.Cojimar 1946 wrote: ↑23 Feb 2019, 16:49 This thread is borderline offensive to Jack Sharkey. What did Galento do to be compared with someone like Sharkey?
Re: Jack Sharkey vs Tony Galento
Sharkey beat George Godfrey, Harry Wills, Primo Carnera, Young Stribling, and has a controversial loss to Jack Dempsey. Galento beat Nathan Mann, and has a controversial win over Nova, and that's about it.oogiebe wrote: ↑23 Feb 2019, 18:42Sharkey wasn't as great as this thread may lead you to believe.Cojimar 1946 wrote: ↑23 Feb 2019, 16:49 This thread is borderline offensive to Jack Sharkey. Sharkey was a weaker champion IMO, but a class above Galento, who wasn't even one of the best contenders in a weaker era than when Sharkey fought.
Re: Jack Sharkey vs Tony Galento
The press conferences for this would have been epic, as they were both first class trash talkers.
If, in fantasy matchups, you go with the best version of a fighter, then I think you easily go with Sharkey here.
Sharkey, on a good night, would be a tough night for most fighters.
Unless Galento’s blatant dirty tricks mentally derails him (think the Dempsey fight) you gotta go with the phoney Irishman.

Sharkey by tko on cuts, different class of fighter. Joe hipp is a better fantasy fight for Tony, I'll take hipp.
Re: Jack Sharkey vs Tony Galento
It would be epic and Galento would call Sharkey a bum like he actually said on Joe Louis and Max Baer.Contendeh wrote: ↑23 Feb 2019, 22:50 The press conferences for this would have been epic, as they were both first class trash talkers.
