30 years ago Duran beat Barkley.

Post by paddy chavez »

I just see that it was 30 ago yesterday that Duran pulled off one of his best victories vs the much bigger and younger Barkley . I remember watching it at a girlfriend's place and I broke the sofa jumping up and falling back on it when Duran floored the blade.
It was Duran's last great performance and he showed all the fire and skill that made him who he was.

How did you see it live? I had to wait a week or so for USA or ESPN to show it. Amazing fight and performance.

It was the next day in the UK but it was before instant access to results so it was like watching it live

Awesome, I remember seeing the result on ESPN at a bar and losing my shit. I wonder why they dont try some fights during the week. All the big ones were week days, I think that was. Not that it was big heading in.

That win over Iran Barkley got to put Roberto with the top 5 greatest pound per pound boxers that ever lived. It was his most courageous performance. I thought I saw everything about him. At 37, and being washed up, he pulled another miracle.

I remember my father crying tears of joy as Duran took the title from Barkley. He was a massive Duran fan.
