Groves comments on Degale's retirement

Post by whiskey »

[On DeGale's retirement] Do you have some level of compassion now for James Degale?

"No, not in the slightest." said Groves. "It's done. It's put to bed."

"We'll never hear from him again. That suits me just fine. We'll never have to hear, see from James Degale ever again !!"

Groves then goes on to lament that he should have retired immediately in the ring "That's it mate your done. Don't call a press conference next week to announce your retiring because nobody cares !"

"Thanks Chris ! you done me a solid"

That's fair enough he could of said a lot worse. They never got on never will, so why would he be respectful of him when asked the question

A bit harsh tbh always liked DeGale, silky smooth boxer just couldn't get over the injuries...

Degale achieved more than him and didn't get banjo'd in front of 80000 people nor did he bitch out of his last fight

aye, he won a version of the belt against Chudinov which was a vacant belt no comparison to DeGale's achievements !

Groves may not of achieved as much as degale but degales shown just as much contempt to groves in the past, talked just as much s**t & it's not suprising groves had these comments toward him...groves will talk sensible to you if you talk sensible to him it seems, but if you don't he'll give you stick back, nothing wrong with that

If I remember correctly, Groves and DeGale boxed for the same amateur club - they boxed each other twice and Groves won them both.

DeGale then went to the Olympics and won gold - I am sure Groves would have loved to have done this and maybe this is where much of the animosity comes from?

Does anybody know what happened and why Degale went to the Olympics and not Groves?

they both won vacant belts and won euro and brtsh titles. groves beat james though so hell always have that....just as froch beat groves.. i rate there careers similar and dont see how you can act as though 'lol groves you didnt do nearly as much'

they both got beaten up last fght too. wouldnt say groves beng stopped by smths any 'worse' then degale beng pushed around and beaten up by jr...who groves had beat 2 fights before as well

He was an exceptional amatuer. He was so skilled... I genuinely think his peak came pre-Groves, seems like it's been a steady decline from there (I know he's been a world champion post-Groves but his opposition has never been amazing)

I don't know why he was picked above Groves but he was good

Fair and balanced comments from George, a pretty accurate assessment of James’ career.

In this age of broadcasters fawning over fighters contracted to their channel and lavishing praise on them out of all proportion to their achievements perhaps it’s no surprise that some people would see a hard hitting critique of a career as disrespectful and unfair but I found his comments to be refreshingly honest and genuine, in stark contrast to most of the waffle spouted by cheerleading pundits these days.

ya maybe i missed something that other ppl can only see.

you can argue close either way for better career but certanly one didnt put himself levels above the other where you can go 'lolz at you but this guy had a much better career'

and of course groves has the satisfication of winning there head to head fight. i also dont really see how the smith loss is any more embarassing the degale getting his ass beaten in a miserable performance vs a guy groves had beat not long before.

Meh, better genuine smugness and animosity than faux humility and sympathy.
DeGale won Olympic Gold and a prestigious World Championship but Groves made more money (I believe), has more fans and public support and was widely regarded as ‘THE’ champion.

Bit sad to hear George sound like froch tbh. Hasn't learnt from his rivals mistakes. I always thought that deep down they were on friendly terms and just making a few quid, guess I got that wrong

Degale taunted Groves for years and even after Groves beat Degale he taunted groves so why cant Groves stick a sly boot in? He picked Eubank to beat Groves weeks before and he was right. Tbh Degale sounded punchu in the press conferences leading upto the fight and i think Badou Jack took something away from Degale the night they fought because Degale hasnt looked the same since. I wish Degale well in his retirement,he has served this sport well regardless of wether you like him or not,a true road warrior

Groves could have been the bigger man and shown some magnanimity. He chose not to, which is a shame.
