Sparring stories.

There's millions of them.

A few are probably actually true.

Great idea...how about a video!! :TU:

Any way you cut it Dychko's empty claim is just damage control. After rattling off 7 KO victories in less than 9 months, Dychko has sat idle since early July, in a state where scrubs and tomato cans are a dime-a-dozen and fight shows take place just about every week of the year.

Time to get off your duff Ivan and leave fantasy land behind!!

Dychko on sparrings with Klitschko and Wilder

Heavyweight Ivan Dychko (7-0, 7 KOs) of Kazakhstan, bronze medalist of the 2012 London Olympics, drew a parallel between work in training camps of former world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder (40-0, 39 KOs).

“It was in June 2016. At that time it was cool. I have already participated in the 2012 Olympics. If you compare at that time - to be a sparring partner of Wladimir Klitschko and the Olympics - I choose that it's better to be a sparring partner of Klitschko. He is cool, he is a legend, he is a champion of champions.

“I always wondered how much I would pay to train in the camp with Wladimir Klitschko? And then I had the opportunity to go to him, and he pays me.

- What are your impressions of the training camp of the world champion WBC Deontay Wilder? How do you work with him in pairs?

“I thought he was cooler. Always compare with the camp of Wladimir Klitschko. Because after Klitschko my emotions went off scale. At Wilder's camp I was so... yes. I also tuned in to sparring, I thought that now I will miss the champ’s wild right hand, and I will have to withstand his blow. But it wasn’t ...

“Of course he’s good, slikked, but I expected more. Sometimes I gave up slack, but only at the request of his coach. There was a moment when the coach told me: “Do not force up, be simpler.” But I need to do so that he does not punch me hard, I let myself be beaten on points. Here you need to know the specifics of the work.

“If I, an unknown person, came and beat the champion, he may begin to doubt himself. Their task is to prevent this. It happened when I beat Luis Ortiz in sparring. Comparing Klitschko and Wilder, Deontay seemed to me not as good as Klitschko, so it was easier and easier for me to spar with him.

“Well, the training camp itself is organized worse for his sprarring partners, for the fighters, and, accordingly, cheaper. My opinion is that boxers like Wilder and Ortiz are quite easy for me. Wilder can be defeated, and there’s nothing new to invent,” said Dychko.

Thanks Ilya for the article. It's not like Dychko was talking trash against Ortiz or anyone else. He said those things in an interview. But for a top HW prospect to rely on sparring achievements as proof of his ability is an empty boast when he has not had an actual boxing match in almost 8 months.

Sparring workouts do NOTHING to boost your legacy...just ask Paulie Spadafora, who claimed he "beat" Mayweather in sparring. But Spadafora's genuine achievements in real boxing matches were not very impressive: A close decision win in an IBF title defense over Angel Manfredy (who got KOd early by Mayweather & Corrales) and a draw with WBA champ Leonard Dorin (who got destroyed early by Arturo Gatti).

It would be a shame for somebody with Dychko's talent to end up with a 3rd-rate legacy like Spadafora's. Stop living on past laurels because sparring sessions dont count like real boxing matches do. So it's time to break out of your inactive slump & face some real opponents, even if it's against scrubs or tomato cans that most other new prospects face early in their pro careers.

He was fighting very frequently but now it is almost eight months since his last fight. Perhaps he is hurt.

There's absolutely no news on the guy. He's pushing 30 and needs to get busy, or else he'll lose his window of opportunity.

Even if it was true you cant make much about sparring stories. To give you an example, I remember Alex Trujillo a former olympian decent prospect who got embarrassed by Emanuel Augustus beat Miguel Cotto in sparring years ago. Fight day is when they should be as close to 100% as possible. Anything can happen during camp.

Sparring is meaningless in this fashion. Far different from an actual bout, as we all know. (or hopefully know) :OhYes:

Could be true!! If so he should admit it and get back in action ASAP!!

His silence on why he's inactive is hurting his career more than an honest admission of injury and detailing of his treatment plan would do. Look at Lomachenko, he had surgery and was back in action in a relatively short recovery time. If anything, many will cut him some slack because of the injury!!

Sparring means little. I'll bet Marciano often looked second best in sparring. Totally different when it's for real.

Sparring doesn’t really matter.

Two men with different levels of fitness and at different stages of training camp.

One of them may be trying out new techniques, to learn new tricks, which inevitably results in mistakes being made.

One of the employed sparring partners may be trying their best and treating the spar as if it was a world title fight, whereas the established fighter may simply be treating the session as another day at the office.

Sometimes one of the fighters may be exhausted from their training, or carrying a slight niggling injury, and not mentally up for sparring.

Even Floyd Mayweather Jr. has recently admitted to having quite a few rough sparring sessions, where his opponent(s) often got the better of him. Tyson Fury often admits to getting his áss handed to him when he’s sparred. It happens to all fighters at some point. And I know all this from personal experience.

Any up-and-comer, like Ivan Dychko, is going to treat any sparring sessions against big name fighters as if they were real contests. And even if the Kazakhstani often got the better of some of the guys he faced, it doesn’t really matter. It’s meaningless, since the fighters he sparred against probably didn’t give it their all.

Dychko's claims are meaningless.

Nothing like words straight out of the mouth.
Tricky business being a sparring partner. You're basically getting paid to make your employer gain confidence, otherwise you get fired.

As for the relationship between sparring and fighting, well that's the same in any sport or
exam/ test. A question of confidence v pressure. I've witnessed a firsthand example myself of how good someone was in practice compared to how ordinary they looked once on television. Must happen all the time.

Nothing less than tragic for the individual.
