WBSS Cruiserweight (1/2 Final): Mairis Briedis vs. Krzysztof Glowacki - June 15, 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

....at Arena Riga in Briedis’ hometown of Riga, Latvia, as announced through the WBSS press office.

“We are expecting another exciting night at the Arena Riga,” said Kalle Sauerland, Comosa’s Chief Boxing Officer. “The 200 lb. tournament is about finding the best cruiserweight for the future. Both Briedis and Glowacki are eager - and have the potential - to be that boxer and they will produce a spectacular semi-final.”

“By (June), the Briedis-Glowacki contest should be for the full (WBO) belt as Usyk is going to heavyweight,”
Sauerland suggested to BS.com, with such a move possibly also freeing up a belt for Dorticos-Tabiti.

Judging by their latest performances Glowacki will win.

I'm skeptical as to whether or not they're even gonna be able to carry this thing off to the end. They've already lost fighters in one of the weight classes ,and will likely lose more before it's over.

Hopefully Baranchyk stay in and we will see all wbss matches this year. I am curious who will leave 140 tournemant as a winner and if Inoue hype is real. Not really interested in cruiserweight tournament, but at least it will provide some fights when elite fighters will fight against each other :box: :box: :box:

Briedis was in terrible shape recently vs Gevor (to whom he arguably lost) and the french guy, Glowacki is always in much better shape when he's facing decent opponents. I think that we know how Glowacki will show up, it all depwnds of Briedis' shape. Breidis from Gevor fight would lost on points due to Glowacki's agressive style and pressure. My pick is a Glowacki 116-112 type of decision but it's a 50/50 fight really. Both of them have comparable resumes.

For the record I'd favor Breidis in the fight, but it's a good matchup.

Briedis has had 2 poor porfermances since his loss to Usyk. He’ll need to be on his A-game

I haven't seen Glowacki fight lately so I can't comment on his form. Did Breidis get hurt by the Russian or something? I don't see how beating a guy 100-90 on all 3 cards is a poor performance exactly.

briedis looked like dog diaheria vs gevor, glowacki looked way better vs a better opponent. on that form glowacki wins handily, but maybe different versions will turn up.

i do feel glow has been underrated a bit. doesnt seem to get mentioned by fans as being in the mix of top flight cruisers but i think hes good and has a real chance to beat briedis here and if he does also whoever wins on the other side

Thousands of tickets have already been sold and the demand is huge for the cruiserweight semi-finals at the Arena Riga in Latvia on June 15. Now all ticket categories are on sale.

Hotly-anticipated is an understatement with tickets being sold rapidly for the cruiserweight double-header – Mairis Briedis vs Krzysztof Glowacki and Yunier Dorticos vs Andrew Tabiti.

“I am extremely happy to learn that - after only 24 hours ticket sale - the fans will turn up in huge numbers on June 15,” said Briedis the hometown- and Latvian national hero. "It motivates me to train hard throughout the training camp to be ready when the time comes to stand in front of the Latvian crowd."

The World Boxing Super Series semi-finals, including Josh Taylor's first world title fight against Ivan Baranchyk, will be shown live on Sky Sports.

An exciting schedule for the WBSS starts this Saturday, live on Sky Sports, as Nonito Donaire battles Zolani Tete with the WBA and WBO bantamweight belts at stake, while Regis Prograis also challenges Kiryl Relikh for the WBA super-lightweight title in Louisiana.

Taylor then attempts to become Scotland's latest world champion when he takes on IBF champion Baranchyk in another super-lightweight semi-final at the SSE Hydro on May 18, live on Sky Sports.

The cruiserweight semis will be staged in Latvia on June 15, live on Sky Sports, as former world champions Mairis Briedis and Krzysztof Glowacki collide in the last four, and ex-WBA champion Yunier Dorticos faces unbeaten America Andrew Tabiti for a place in the final.

Adam Smith, head of Sky Sports Boxing, said: "I've admired the talent of Josh Taylor for a while and I'll look forward to another red-hot atmosphere in Glasgow as Taylor bids to become the latest in a line of proud Scottish world champions.

"It's wonderful to add The World Boxing Super Series semi-finals to our stacked Sky Sports schedule for the summer.

"The fearsome Naoya Inoue and four-weight champion Nonito Donaire also bring star quality to a tournament featuring world title fights, former champions, and unbeaten contenders, starting this Saturday on Sky Sports."

"I'm delighted to bring these fight nights to Sky Sports and particularly pleased to air the big May 18 card from Glasgow," said Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing Managing Director. "It's a massive chance for Josh Taylor to become world champion and the fight between pound-for-pound star Inoue and Rodriguez is a cracker.

A real 50-50 fight this. A few fights ago, I would have picked Briedis to win a deserved decision. But his 2 performances since Usyk have been piss poor. Arguably lost.

I don’t really care who wins the fight, I feel both have something to prove and Glowacki hasn’t been a world champion longer than Briedis and he wants it more.

We’ll have to wait and see.

Kalle was hoping the WBO belt would be at stake here, but Usyk is yet to vacate the WBO. Even the WBC and IBF.

Usyk is probably waiting until his HW debut or until he’s forced to.

Glowacki was on a camp in Benidorm, Spain (where he used the help of Benidorm based trainer Roman Anuchin, who was previously a trainer of Briedis for some time), now trains in Warsaw with his trainer Fiodor Łapin, he's almost not appearing in the media, looks like he's training really hard.

it's 50-50 indeed, Glowacki was better in last performance, Briedis arguably lost to Gevor, Glowacki also had his bad moments after losing the title, in 2018 he was almost stopped by Serhiy Radchenko. The better the opposition is , the better is Glowacki.

Briedis and Głowacki know each other, Briedis trained in Warsaw gym in 2010, maybe they even sparred.

Maybe same applies for Briedis. Maybe he needs a world class boxer in front of him to get the best outta himself.

but Gevor, while he's not top of the top, was at least an top 15 opponent, he shouldn't underestimate him, especially after the poor performance against the French guy. but maybe it is as you say, we will see. i just expect great fight and fair judging and let the better win :bag:
