He's one of my all time favorite fighters.
You could pretty well bet on him knocking his opponent out or getting knocked out himself

Yeah who would have thought after he got stopped in five IIRC by Ron Stander that he'd go on to have the career that he did and achieve legend status?

You'd have needed a crystal ball for that one.

Shavers was labelled with a stamina problem for much of his early career but after he went the full 15 rounds with Ali, the doubters disappeared and he earned himself a second shot with a stunning first-round dismissal of Ken Norton. Looking at his record, he fought just about all the heavyweight 'names' in the 1970s except Joe Frazier and George Foreman. Shavers-Foreman in particular is one that got away.

This is true. I always think of Shavers/Foreman as Earnie's greatest 'fight that never happened' but Shavers/ Frazier could have been a real corker as well.

In the early seventies when Shavers had a rep for poor stamina as you say, both fights would have been regarded as a mismatch, and of no interest, but a few years on the prospect of either would have been extremely exciting.

Shavers never accomplished anything close to what Foreman and Frazier did.

He was as powerful as anyone, but Shavers wasn't at the same all around level as those 2.

How many of you would wager on Shavers to defeat either? I'm guessing very very few.

They would both have been favoured to beat Shavers but Earnie's power always gave him a chance. From memory both Lyle (who did) and Norton (who didn't) were favoured to beat him too. Most would say Norton was regarded as having the better career and by that token the superior fighter, but that's not really the point is it?

I met him once in Liverpool a few years ago.

He said he was living in England and he was really nice.

I don't know if he's still here or living back in the U S A now.
