I agree 100%.candyslim wrote: ↑02 Mar 2019, 10:07 Povetkin is the ideal first foray into the division. He is still a quality opponent despite being well past his best. It's extremely unlikely that Povetkin will upset the script, but it will be a meaningful win for Usyk and valuable experience.
Helenius is big but he is largely irrelevant at world level, and easy meat for someone of Usyk's ability. He showed in schooling Joyce that to beat him size isn't enough. A win over a 2 metre fighter like Joyce or Helenius doesn't really help us determine how he's likely to fare against the big three.
It's difficult to see what he can do to prepare himself for those guys but I think Povetkin is a good start.
Usyk ‘in talks' w/Povetkin for First HW Bout

Re: Usyk ‘in talks' w/Povetkin for First HW Bout
Maybe this fight will be this era’s Holyfield v Dokes? Ya never know.
That is an excellent fight.
Evander is still my favorite example of a Cruiser king coming up to heavy; the way he was brought along and his career was built I think is the ideal way to do it.
Evander became HW champ at barely 28, so Usyk has a little catching up to do at 32.
But Usyk is his own man, and I can’t wait to see how his career at Heavy unfolds.
Obviously, the Povetkin fight gets him pretty close to top 5 and pretty close to where he needs to be.

I'm pretty certain that on a previous thread, just his CW conversion to HW makes him number four.Contendeh wrote: ↑02 Mar 2019, 14:07 Maybe this fight will be this era’s Holyfield v Dokes? Ya never know.

I might be in the minority but think this a poor matchup, Povetkins punch resistance has gone (post ostarine) - Usyk mid to late stoppage
Re: Usyk ‘in talks' w/Povetkin for First HW Bout
the only guys ive seen hurt pov lately are both much bigger punchers then usyk, usyk will outbox him i think but not level him
Re: Usyk ‘in talks' w/Povetkin for First HW Bout
Hearn mentioned Takam as a potential opponent for Usyk.
Re: Usyk ‘in talks' w/Povetkin for First HW Bout
I agree.
That he did ... with a view to fighting Povetkin next.

No fighter 175 lbs or heavier possesses the skills that Usyk has. He is a big cruiserweight and average size heavy. Seems all but certain his movement and skills will overwhelm Povetkin. The fight will demonstrate incredible boxing and remarkable sportsmanship.

Usyk, Povetkin, Takam or Hearn?
Guess you mean Hearn. He's hated and mistrusted enough to be a top politician.

I thought huck clearly beat povetkin but I don't remember him putting him in serious trouble. Even more clearly huck hits harder than usyk. Wide points win is the safe play.jamamb wrote: ↑03 Mar 2019, 20:04you mean huck right, well i mean by the same token huck hurt glowacki way more then huck hurt pov, yet usyk couldnt even drop glowacki

When did Povetkin ever fight at cruiserweight? He has always been the same weight ever since he started as a pro in 2005, low 220s, up to 232 on rare occasions. Unlike the american and british dopers who put on muscular weight very quickly. But I also think Usyk will win .

By Tim Royner: Oleksander Usyk vs. Alexander Povetkin is still a possibility for May 18, according to promoter Eddie Hearn, but he says Carlos Takam is also a possibility for Oleksander on that card on DAZN. If Usyk strong faces the 38-year-old Takam in his heavyweight debut, Povetkin would then fight 2012 U.S Olympian Michael Hunter on the undercard.

I'd rather it be Takam.

povetkin vs hunter is actually pretty interesting too though, i can see hunter winning that
always thought for a guy with such a good amateur career hunter had gone under the rader, so glad tosee the recent boost in his career, hes good and brings a unique style

Agreed, I'd bet on hunter .
Re: Usyk ‘in talks' w/Povetkin for First HW Bout
I thought Hunter showed relatively well v Usyk until the last round. He has been on a good run at heavy. Usyk v Takam and Povetkin v Hunter would be a nice card.

You are correct. Povetkin fought Huck, the cruiserweight champion at the time, but the fight was at heavyweight.Ilya Muromets wrote: ↑03 Mar 2019, 20:56

Takam makes a very worthy opponent for Usyk as well. Takam would demand the full force of Usyk's skills to win.Ilya Muromets wrote: ↑03 Mar 2019, 21:16 By Tim Royner: Oleksander Usyk vs. Alexander Povetkin is still a possibility for May 18, according to promoter Eddie Hearn, but he says Carlos Takam is also a possibility for Oleksander on that card on DAZN. I never said he fought as a cruiserweight, I said he fought a cruiserweight, which he did in Huck.Ilya Muromets wrote: ↑03 Mar 2019, 20:56

I remember Povetkin in a bit of trouble late in the fight, mostly due to exhaustion but still. With Usyk it might go the distance, but my bet is a late stoppage with an exhausted Povetkin still on his feet.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑03 Mar 2019, 20:39I thought huck clearly beat povetkin but I don't remember him putting him in serious trouble. OK got it, tho Huck was fighting as a heavy in that one. 209 1/2 I see.

I can see that happening too. That's why I'd rather Usyk fights Takam or someone else. I don't want to see Povetkin lose.
