Dillian Whyte to join ESPN

Post by BigDoofus »

Reported to be close to signing for Arum.

Sky's domestic boxing schedule has been terrible lately. They should review their sole promoter policy because it's not working.

Top Rank will be making a big play for lots of heavyweights. Wouldn’t be surprised if they sign up Parker and Povetkin.

I think Eddie will be pissed if Dillian does join Top Rank though. I think Matchroom have done an amazing job with him promotionally. Considering where he was 4 years ago (not known, rarely fighting, serving a drugs ban) to headlining PPVs and selling out the O2 shows how well he’s done and how well he’s been promoted. Bar delivering a world title fight (when there’s only AJ/Wilder holding belts) I think they’ve done everything they could do.

Re: Sky’s boxing, do you think we had a better choice of shows when there were multiple promoters on Sky? I certainly don’t. There were an awful lot of poor Maloney and Matchroom shows and because the competition wasn’t great, many of FW’s shows had mostly one sided fights.

I think sometimes we’re guilty of looking back with rose tinted glasses on the old Sky shows.

Hearn being the sole promoter on Sky has worked for last 6 years and I don't think bringing anyone else in would help unless they wanted to go back to the old FFN model ,looks likes a downturn at the moment similar to 2015/16 when Hearn lost Degale/Selby to Al and there were some shocking sfns.He needs to get AJ back over here and manufacture another two ppvs from somewhere and Sky should relalize there is no Haye-Bellew he can pull out of his hat at the moment through (Khan-Brook could be possible).

Boxing news is doing an article about British boxing being in a little bit of crisis due to the American money and British fighters wanting to go over there and that does seem to be a trend and also with Hearn his focus is split now on both markets now with DAZN money being a big factor.

Boxing on Sky and on UK TV is in jeopardy here I fear.

Everything from Hearn lately has all been about Dazn, Dazn, Dazn. Rumours of all these top name fighters possibly signing up to Dazn etc.

Sky boxing events now seem limited to NxtGen tripe and the odd domestic / Euro level fight with not much real interest or relevance. Anything remotely interesting is put on PPV.

It seems the US has picked up interest in the heavyweight scene again, and now our guys are going over there. Apart from AJ, Sky PPV isn't going to do big numbers, and Eddie seems pretty focused on Dazn and streaming revenue, so it's a matter of time before AJ goes there too.

I thought this might happen.
If Wrrn and Fury play hard ball with Wilder's people he might have had no where to turn. I think a fight between Wilder and Whyte has just become that much closer!!

Sky must be disappointed in that they have invested a lot in him giving him straightforward fights at this level which have put him on the verge of a world title shot.
However they must look at themselves as they haven't been able to or haven't wanted to push him to get that shot.
It has been clear he is the b side and being held in reserve for if AJ slips up.
I think they should have pushed harder to get him a shot at Wilder, a fight Wilder surely would have taken. Or at least got him a fight against Charr for the regular title.
You can't expect a man in Whyte's position to wait around in the hope AJ doesn't live up to expectations.

That might blow up in his face. He'll max out on American subscribers shortly. Wish I knew the number now.

American audiences will be crucial to its success, so he will need to use some of his huge budget signing some fighters up. Obv Canelo was a good signing but he needs to build on that.
Also it will be interesting to see if he can break into the Chinese market, the numbers would be huge there, very nationalistic folk too, if he could develop a world class fighter to fight in world class against the top Americans for example, it would be a license to print money.

Good for Whyte, Hearn has mugged sky right off, they can't be happy, saying that if we can end up getting DAZN for £10 a month I'll let him off :OhYes:

Shame on sky tv ya mean, they put everything on matchroom instead if having maybe two promotors they deal with then they could if had a promotor vs promotor shown but no seems like bazza and matchroom held sky to ransom i.e you take boxing away and we will take darts snooker pool etc away too. Just my opinion.

There might be more boxing fans in the UK than there is in America despite the huge population discrepancy. We don't care about boxing, Eddie can't change that anymore than al or Bob can.

I'm a bit of a sado for wanting to know viewing figures and live attendances but agree I'd love to know subscriber numbers.

They do, though hearn does have the advantage of being associated with canelos exclusive network so he'll be involved as the b side in most of his fights.

Arum is an old bull and knows that the key to popularity in America is through the Heavyweights. Americans love the big boys; always have and always will.

Meh, Americans don't love boxing at all. Wilder/fury did a bit better than I expected but it wasn't near something like Floyd/berto or even PAC/broner. Americans love the UFC.

Point here is that boxing is not popular in America as compared to eras past. In order to build the sport up again in the US it'll happen via the HW's, and Arum knows that.

It will never be big here again. Fury/pulev sure as hell won't help. Lol. Arum is just setting himself up to cash in on some of the Joshua lottery ticket.
