Royal Albert Hall - best venue for boxing

Post by dalcumly »

I'm really jealous I'm not attending the boxing tonight at the Albert Hall. In my mind its the best venue for boxing in the UK.
If you've never been you really must make the effort one of these nights.
As soon as you arrive your just met with the idea that its circular design was meant for boxing. If you removed the cars from outside and concentrated on the surrounding buildings you could easily transport yourself back into history.
Once inside, with the ring in the middle of the floor, there isn't a bad seat in the house. According to Gareth A Davies's excellent article in the press this morning the venue holds 5,500, more than sufficient for all but the biggest fights.
My only visit was in 1990 to see the Mike McCallum and Michael Watson fight and I think Lennox Lewis might have been on the same bill.
The only downside was a clown right behind me screaming out every now and again for some reason - LLLLIIIINNNNEEEEKKKAAARRR ???????

It's a venue I always associate with boxing and big fights before the big arenas took over.

I feel similarly about Madison Square Garden too, if you had a big fight there you know you'd arrived but over most of my lifetime it's been overshadowed by the tackiness of Las Vegas.

It is a wonderful hall and I had the pleasure of watching Bruno, Kaylor, Honeyghan and Duke McKenzie there, plus Bomber Graham's gutsy effort against Mike McCallum in 1989. Also watched the London ABA finals there a few times.

Nice posts and topic. When I lived in London, I was also fond of Wembley Conference Centre due to its comfy armchair seats. Was rather like going to a posh cinema in an odd way.

That was my only time too. Definitely wasn't me behind you. It is a great venue for boxing.

Wouldn’t mind more cards held there.

WWE are using it a lot for their UK NXT shows
