Sergey Kuzmin vs. Joey Dawejko - March 9, 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Russia’s Kuzmin will fight for the first time in 2019 in supporting capacity to Bivol’s light heavyweight title defense versus Long Island (N.Y.)-based contender Joe Smith Jr. on March 9 in upstate New York.

Kuzmin will face Philadelphia’s Joey Dawejko in a scheduled 10-round contest.

Dawejko (19-6-4, 11KOs) will never be confused for a world beater, but has always provided a tough night at the office for all previous foes. The 28-year old Philadelphia-bred pug has only been stopped once in his near 10-year career, the lone such occasion coming in a 3rd round knockout at the hands of then-unbeaten Charles Martin in a 2013 fight he accepted on barely one week’s notice.

A record of 11-3-2 has since followed, with hard fought losses to local rivals Amir Mansour and Bryant Jennings going the distance and with the veteran gatekeeper remaining on his feet for all 10 rounds each time. His level of toughness is precisely the test Kuzmin seeks while remaining active in pursuit of a heavyweight title for which he plans to challenge by year’s end.

Joey hinted to that in another thread about Kuzmin a week or so ago. This is a good test for Kuzmin as Dawejko is a tough bastidge!

Kuzmin broke his finger early in the fight, so the fight stunk.

Kuzmin needed the last couple of rounds to win. Dawejko was winning through round 7/8.

Plodding Kuzmin barely won. Showed pure cardio and lack of defence. Makhmudov and even pretty small (for heavy) Romanov looks way better Russian prospects than him

Totally. Curious to see if he drops in the BoxRec rankings. At number 14, he should be way better. Props to Dawejko.

Joey always gets respect for his guts and his toughness but he's a much better all around fighter than he gets credit for. At 5' 10" he is normally giving away a lot in height, but he's always in the fight no matter who is in the other corner. Most fighters don't win major belts but fighters like Joey are the lifeblood of the sport.

A dull fight of the two puddings. Well, Dawejko is a journeyman, but Kuzmin is considered to be a rising to the top guy. With such performance he won't handle anyone from the top-30.

I had Kuzmin by 1 round. Did anyone score it a draw or for Dawejko?

I didn't score it and skipped some rounds, but I had a general impression of a very even fight, that was just a bit edged by Kuzmin.

Dawejko showed his lack of class in his behaviour after the fight.

It was more how he stormed out of the ring petulantly, and yelled obscenities at Kuzmin's ring after the decision. It was a tight fight, hardly a robbery.

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean any harm. I was upset with the decision. I fought my heart out! I’m one of the fighters that needs a ko to get a draw. But hey, I take on all comers. I apologized to the commission, Eddie Hearn, and Kuzmins team after. And when I told him I fucked him up, he was saying “look at his face” lol so I had to shoot something back at him. I respect all fighters. Again, I was upset and my emotions got the best of me. I apologized.

I didn't see it as such a bad thing. Geez, give yourself a break. It's right after a hard fought fight that could've gone either way. Heat of the moment thing. You made me laugh as I felt Kuzmin was in some denial after the fight with his obnoxious smile. He knew he got lucky eking out a MD. You gave him more than he could deal with. You rock Joey!!!
